Bikes are so dangerous but I can't stop myself from riding it for over 25 years now.

Re: Paul Williams injured in motorcycle accident

Saddest yet best thing I've read in a long time

By Osman Rodriguez

Despite his tragic accident on Sunday, former champion Paul Williams is in very good spirits. The boxer, who was originally scheduled to face WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 15, was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday near Atlanta. Williams is currently paralyzed from the waist down and the doctors believe the boxer will likely never be able to walk again.

From his bed in WellStar Kennestone Hospital, Williams was joking and feeling good as he spoke to Atlanta's 11Alive. Williams hopes to walk again, but realizes the odds are very slim. One of his doctors recently stated there is a 90% chance that Williams will not recover any movement below his waist. Doctors expect the swelling in his back to size down in time for an operation on Thursday to stabilize the healthy portion of his spine which controls his upper body movements.

"We had a big fight -- supposed to be -- coming up," Williams said. "I'm sorry that it got pushed back. But that's all right. That's the way the cookie crumbles."

"[Doctors] told me there's a very slight chance of walking, because the spine was, like, crushed, or whatever," he said. "I should be able to sit up on my own. But as far as me walking, and all that, it's all on me. I'm going to be walking, I know that. That's how I feel. If I can't walk, then, oh well, hakuna matata [No Worries]. I'll be on a boat fishing."

Williams' trainer/manager, George Peterson, is amazed with Williams' warrior mentality.

"He's not suffering at all," Peterson said. "He's absolutely without pain. No broken bones, no scratches, no bruises, or anything of that sort. So, for the most part, he's all set, and he's ready to go. The doctors mentioned that he would never walk again. The first thing he told me is, 'Mr. Peterson, I'm just sorry, I'm just sorry that this happened,' he said. 'But I'll get ready and I'll get back to camp. In a couple of days I'll be in and out of here.'"

Like you guys, I read the initial reports and yes, they were depressing.

However, things seem a lot more hopeful now.

Man, I really hope he can walk again one day. I keep thinking of PW in my prayers.

This whole topic reminded me of a very controversial treatment used in some instances where cold saline is injected into the victim to slow the swelling process in the spine.
From my very limited understanding, when spinal damage occurs, the body naturally produces 'scar tissue' (for lack of better term) to fuse off the injured portion of the spine.
It's a protective response to preserve the body.

By using this chilled saline solution, it lowers the body's temperature to slow this swelling response.
I read a very interesting article about it in an SI once where an NFL team physician administered this practice to an injured player. It saved his life and he's now able to walk.
If this treatment wasn't used, the player would have been permanently paralyzed.

Amazingly, this team physician had JUST returned from a seminar that was specifically to talk about the benefits of this cold saline technique.

On the flip side, for motorcycle enthusiasts, there's products out there such as moto airbag which can save your spine and your life in an accident.
I know guys that use these and have swear by them.
