By the way, I didn't notice it but apparently Michigan ran the same botched 4th down play from the Michigan State game against Ohio State, but this time it worked. It's amazing what happens when everyone executes and does their job.
When was that play ran? This is the second time I've heard it mentioned, but I don't remember it being used in the same way with the HB motioning out wide.

Yea, they looked much better in the spread and shotgun running the football. Fitz runs hard and gets those tough yards, but I don't doubt that it helps when the defense has to worry about DRob too.

Speaking of MGoBlog, they just did a breakdown of the formations used all year long. Sure, the I didn't work against Iowa, but the shotgun didn't work against Michigan State:

As you can see Milbut, Michigan didn't have a single game this year where well over half the snaps weren't from the shotgun, and some of the highest shotgun counts were early in the season against Eastern Michigan and San Diego State.

I didn't notice it during the game so I don't know when it was run. It was successful like every other play they ran against Ohio State.

I would bet that the offense would put up a lot more points against that defense now than they did in early October.

Very true, the offense really hit its stride after the Iowa game.

Thanks for linking this article, lonewolf. I think the article actually further kind of shows what I was saying. Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Perdue and Iowa were the 4 games they ran I form >20% of the time.

Ironically they also ran > 50% of the time in every game this year but two, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

The chart I'm referring to specifically is :

Chart of formation tendencies (pass & run)
Excised: Plays when the score differential >16, 4th quarters, plays inside the M or opponent's 3 yard line.

I also think this quote from the article says exactly what I was trying to say:
Quote:

This is the same story from above but more dramatic as 33% of the offense is whittled down to nothing by OSU week. Again, the dramatic shift after Iowa.

The first two games they ran heavy I form and it had mixed results. Then they started running heavy spread option and things picked up. I did state I missed the middle of the season, but it looks like they went back to heavy I Form for a few games, then completely abandoned it to close the season.
