I don't think his job as interim HC last year should have any bearing on whether or not he is DC this year. He was a great LB coach and is still a fantastic recruiter.

It may not say much about his defensive coaching abilities specifically, but it does say something about him as a coach in general. He made numerous and frequent poor decisions, and lead the team to a horrendous record, controversy or not.

It's painfully obvious now that he isn't a good defensive play caller either. I'd get someone with an actual track record, someone who knows what he's actually doing.
