i feel reaaaaaaly stupid, but can someone help me with how I put the file on my card with the transfer kit I last did it in July and I have since forgotten how too.

put the file in the memory card folder (probably in my docs)
open x-change
go to 360 Memory Card Tab
Highlight the file on the list
Press To Mem

I did that but it didn't work. In fact, it locked up the game when I tried loading the roster from the mem card.

I figured it out. You can't load the file from the mem card, you have to copy it to the 360 HD, THEN load the game and it auto installs.
