He was named All-American in each of his four years in college (1951-55), scoring 2,461 points and gathering 2,201 rebounds to lead LaSalle to a 102-19 record, the NIT title in 1951, the NCAA crown in 1952 and runner-up in the NCAA in 1955 to Bill Russell-led San Francisco.

Unquestionably, the greatest known athlete in UMass history, Julius Erving, known simply to the world as "Dr. J," played basketball for two seasons under legendary head coach and fellow UMass Hall of Famer Jack Leaman from 1969-71. During his two seasons, Erving averaged an incredible 26.3 points

Odom played one season at Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Conference, where he scored 17.6 points per game and led the Rams to the conference championship in 1999. His three-pointer against Temple University at the buzzer gave the Rams their first A-10 Tournament title.

Despite sitting out his freshman campaign, Jones finished his career at Temple as the school's 13th leading scorer (1,470). As a senior (’93-94), Jones earned Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year honors. An Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American in his senior year, Jones led Temple in scoring (19.2 ppg), blocked shots (1.5 per game) and field goal percentage (.470), and ranked second in rebounding (6.8 rpg) and steals (2.3 spg).

David West
West was the first XU player to get his number retired while still playing for the Musketeers, during which he led Xavier to a top 10 national ranking and a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. West was named as a first-team All-American his senior year and the 2003 Associated Press and United States Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year, averaging 20.1 ppg and 11.8 rpg as a senior while leading XU to its second straight 26–6 season. West led Xavier to 94 wins in his four seasons while finishing as Xavier's all-time blocked shot leader (228 blocks) and second on XU's all-time scoring (2,132 points) and rebounding (1,308 rebounds) lists. West was also named as the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year three years in a row.
