I just nearly pulled off the impossible...

Called it an opportunity failed...but I just nearly took my upstart Campbell Fighting Camels to a victory versus the #14 ranked NC State Wolfpack.

Here is the scenario. I just started up a new legacy on MOP with adjusted sliders in the CPU's favor (makes games the most realistic I have ever played in a long time)...

anyway, I learned to play the game through legacy and whatnot, and finally decided to ante up and start my career with Campbell.

Anyway, I won my first game of the year versus Furman by 20. Then had a back and forth battle with William & Mary in which I won by one point...then, I rolled into the Wolfpack's den...

NC State was 3-0 and ranked in the top 15. I come in thinking...what the hey, atleast give them a good show...

Anyway...I never thought I could even contend, but I found myself at the half down by 1, 30-29. I am going into the second half thinking this is a solid moral victory...

I hang in there, finally taking a lead with about 3 minutes left. I am then up by 3 with about a minute left...then...I can't hit the free throws. I missed 5 of my next 7 free throws and NC State tied it...

I have the ball, drive down the court with Ruell Pringle and...

JUST MISS THE THREE...I go into OT.

I failed to score a point in OT. HOWEVER, NC State managed only one hoop and the harm in the openning moments of the OT period...

I think that just boosted my confidence, don'tcha say?

totally feel your pain, dude. i had a game like that against kansas with my howard bison. i love the fact it really feels like you are pulling the upset instead of just being good at the game.

I don't know how I did it. I have played William and Mary and I felt like they were controlling the game and I just happened to win. I felt like the upstart versus NC State. I felt like they could score whenever they wanted to versus me, but I think my pre game scouting and whatnot along with placing the right practice sched for the week helped as well.

One thing I did was attack the basket and got Julius Hodge into foul trouble early, sooner or later was fouled out late in the 2nd half.

And, I know it is not simply because I am good, because in a "pre-season" game I did versus Furman, I got killed by Furman.

try jistics MOP adjustments to start and work from there.

i like the scouting and practice. to experiment i adjusted the practice style and simmed. i found one style got me killed when i lost and the other all games were close and i had 5 more victories.

the tough part is being patient to not try to play their style of ball.

Ya, upsetting a high ranking team is awesome! My strategy when playing a superior opponent is total ball control, like run the shot clock all the way down to 5. When the CPU goes on runs it becomes necessary. I'll purposely fore-go open looks to keep milking the clock. Playing solid defense obviously is very important too. Minimizing the CPU's time of possession and making them work for every basket is the way to go!

Playing solid defense against a better team is really tough, but feels rewarding when you pull it off. You can even sense a bit of "desperation" from the other team if you keep them from their run-n-gun offense. They'll start putting up bad shots, etc. Very cool imo.

Exactly, I noticed early and in portions of the game that NC State would leave opennings to drive to the hoop, and when I would drive, it would fill up and instead of kicking it out, I'd shoot and then they'd block it.

I needed to never take the bait and just play my high post offense and to take advantage of my steals and defensive boards and fast break points.

Re: I just nearly pulled off the impossible...

Something similar happened to me as Western Illinois playing against Indiana. My PG, Baez, was unconscious from long range all game long and is the sole reason I kept with Bracey Wright and the Hoosiers. They had as big of a lead as 13, but I kept my cool, fought back, and let Baez dominate the offense. Baez hit a three to make it 81-80 in favor of the Leathernecks with about three minutes to go, but then I self-destructed and ended up losing 95-88.
