asking for a friend. Is there some type of download coming so you can play ps2 games on the ps3??? I think mine can't but am confused about this on the new ones.

What sku do you have?

60GBs can play all PS2 games
Older 80GBs can play 80% of PS2 games
40GBs can't play PS2 games
New 80s can't play PS2 games
160GBs can't play PS2 games

There was a rumor that this fall Sony was going to release a update that would allow all PS3 models to play PS2 games. The update was never confirmed or denied but I wouldn't except such a thing if I was you.

thanks. I can't remember which one I have. 60gb or 80gb. But some friends wanted to buy one and were wondering. They heard that rumor too.

My bad, I missed the part where you said it was for a friend.

If they really want PS2 playback, I would try to find a 80GB MGS bundle. I know you can get those at sears.com.

Other than that it will be difficult finding a PS2 playback sku right now.

do those MGS bundles have playback on all games or just some?

80% or so.

Somewhere on playstation.com they have a search engine where you input the game title and it tells you the playability and any issues.

Full BC is only on the 60GB and those are impossible to find new in store. Best bet for those is eBay.
