The U.S. videogame industry experienced its worst year-over-year decline in April since July 2009, according to the latest monthly sales results from research firm NPD Group. Totals sales reached $766 million, a 26 percent decrease from the same time last year.
"Some of the decline is explained by the shift of Easter timing, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "In April '09, consumers attributed $55 million of industry sales to Easter as a purchase occasion, which would account for about 21% of the decline from last year since Easter purchasing happened in March this year."
Hardware sales saw the biggest drop in the category, with a year-over-year decrease of 37 percent. Sales of Nintendo DS accounted for 71 percent of that decrease, which sold over a million units last April. The DS still remained the top selling console for the month, however.
Below are the hardware sales results for April 2009:
Nintendo DS - 440,800
Wii - 277,200
Xbox 360 - 185,400
PlayStation 3 - 180,800
PSP - 65,500
The PlayStation 2 is no longer part of NPD's results, though it is still being tracked.
Video game software sales reached $398,500 million, a 22 percent decrease from the prior year. Ubisoft long-awaited Splinter Cell: Conviction was the top selling game for the month with sales reaching nearly half a million. This is an improvement over Splinter Cell: Double Agent, which sold roughly 300,000 copies for Xbox 360 at launch in October 2006. Conviction's strong debut has nearly matched Double Agent's life-to-date sales on Xbox 360.
"The April software sales were more concentrated among the top-selling games than they were last year and April '10 new releases sold more units than did last April's new releases so it wasn't the top-selling games or the new releases that were at the heart of the software decline," added Frazier. "Those compare very favorably to last year."
Below are the top ten sales results for software. NPD only provided specific numbers for the top five for this month:
1. Splinter Cell: Conviction - Xbox 360 - 486,100
2. Pokemon Soulsilver Version - Nintendo DS - 242,900
3. New Super Mario Bros. WII - Wii - 200,300
4. Pokemon Heartgold Version - Nintendo DS - 192,600
5. God of War III - PlayStation 3 - 180,300
6. Wii Sports Resort W/ Wii Motion Plus - Wii
7. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Xbox 360
8. Wii Fit Plus W/ Balance Board - Wii
9. Just Dance - Wii
10. Super Street Fighter IV - PlayStation 3 |

It was bound to happen eventually. This month the NPD Group, which tracks sales of videogame hardware and software, officially removed the PlayStation 2 from its charts. After a 10-year run, Sony's system has finally slowed down, apparently eclipsed by its younger, sleeker sibling.
From now on, if you're wondering how many PS2 systems have sold in a given month, you'll have to physically walk to the Radio Shack at the strip mall and ask the store manager. In between stifled sobs, IGN PlayStation Executive Editor Greg Miller expressed bittersweet acceptance of the news.
"It's interesting but not unexpected," he said. "The PlayStation 2 turns 10 years old in October. Although the system is still selling well, it's clear that its best days are behind it and Sony's focusing on the PlayStation 3 and PSP. PS2 games are few and far between, so it's time to get on with our lives. Well done, PS2. Enjoy retirement."
The PS2's NPD removal comes at a time when the Nintendo DS is fast approaching the point where it will overtake Sony's system as the best-selling videogame hardware ever. The NPD Group expects the DS will exceed the PS2's install base by October or December of this year. |
