Sony Announces $20 Million Pub Fund For PSN Exclusive Games

Sony has announced that it has added $20 million to the“Pub Fund” it created in 2009 to help talented developers create exclusive games for the PlayStation Network. The fund, which acts like a venture capital firm for developers, has already provided funding for four studios.

“We see the Pub Fund relationship as kind of a venture capital arm investing in really good enterprising developers with clear visions and the ability to deliver great gaming experiences with a difference, with an edge,” Sony’s director of marketing for the PlayStation Network Brandon Stander told VentureBeat.

“The point is that our evaluation group will make sure that we're placing that money into the places that really live up to the vision of the portfolio and really deliver for our consumers,” he said to Joystiq. "I think this commitment is a really strong statement, in that we're doubling down and making this $20 million commitment to make the best content available on any console. I think it's a bold statement. We're making a long-term and really big investment over the next three years.”

The barrier of entry for indie developers is seen as lower for Microsoft’s Xbox Live Indie program. Can Sony bring more innovation to PSN with the Pub Fund? The four titles that have already received funding are Okabu, Payday, Eufloria, and Papo & Yo. The titles span many game types, from first-person shooters to puzzle games.

it's mostly directed at indie developers putting out small titles. MS kills Sony when it comes to unique arcade titles that end up being exclusives. There's even been numerous developers complaining about MS's XBLA policies and Sony has an opportunity to lure some of that talent over if they ever start caring.
