Re: PS3 Looking For An External Hard Drive

A few helpful things:

1. On your PS3 main screen, go to Settings / System Settings / Backup Utility to back up the entire hard drive.

2. To format your external hard drive to Fat 32, use the MiniAide Fat 32 formatter:

3. An entire back up is not necessary for just game saves which will fit nicely on a USB drive. Nevertheless, a periodic backup of your entire hard drive is not a bad idea, especially if you ever need to replace your hard drive or move to a new PS3.

I don't have any movies or pictures saved on my PS3 hard drive and with the exception of two of my games they are all on disc. Why would I need to back up the hard drive given that?

Backs up settings / preferences, etc. in addition to game saves. Makes it easier to restore everything if you have to go that route.

It may depend on the game. In some situations, you may have to download the game again from the PSN store in order to use it on a new hard drive / PS3.

I believe it will back up everything, but won't restore everything unless it's to the same PS3 (it won't restore anything protected by DRM to a different PS3).

The exception might be videos purchased from PSN, I think they have different crazy DRM rules and won't be backed up.

Re: PS3 Looking For An External Hard Drive

Thought I would also post this link if anyone needs a free RAR file opener. I have used this quite a bit with roster files that I have downloaded:
