They would never store them that way, or clear text. Passwords are always hashed, then salted. There are even recipes for how to hash/salt in various ways to make it far more improbably of being hacked in there's a boundary breech.

With that said, if they did gain access to the network and servers, then many times companies make backups of tables/data for testing purposes. When someone says they find something in clear text, then IMHO all they have done is run across one of these files that weren't properly secured, and even then, there's no guarantee that it's valid password data as many times when companies do pull live data, then auto-generate the password so they have real data without exposing the users passwords.

Even still, why do they all have z's in them (for the most part)? Why are many passwords numbers with the digit '9' in them? What is this pattern we are looking at, and how did this hacker discover these but not others? Why isn't Microsoft claiming responsibility for these ones?
I was only disagreeing on the facebook linking part, not on the validity of the data. I'm not a big facebook user.

He's not saying people link their facebook profile to their xbox. You can search up people by email, and most, but not all, use the same email as their xbl. So he did a quick lookup of some of the emails given, but no facebooks showed up.

Well, just looking at the facts: PSN was hacked and XBL wasn't...

Two months of gaming that I didn't miss while I was in school in exchange for awesome free games to play during the summer? They redeemed themselves quite strongly, and I hardly think anybody even remembers that.

(except for the poor COD saps that turned in their PS3's just to play on Live for that time)

The psn getting hacked is probably one of the better things to happen to it in the long run, looking back.

Customers got (and still get) a ton of value, Sony learned of security issues and Sony offered identity theft insurance.

Bad for Sony but they did a fantastic thing for their customers when all was said and done
