Week 6, Day 2 - Group B Recap
GROUP B: Ruud Awakening - van Nistelrooy hat-trick sinks the Yellow Submarine
MANCHESTER UTD..4 van Nistelrooy 29' (p) 37' 70', Rooney 35' VILLAREAL............0 Villareal's European season came to a crashing halt today at the "Theatre of Dreams", handing AS Monaco a quarter finals berth as the second wildcard team. Needing the full three points to progress, the Spaniards were steamrolled by hosts Manchester United 4-0, with Ruud van Nisterooy bagging a hat-trick to shoot to the top of the scoring charts. Following early misses by Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, the Dutch striker opened the scoring on the half hour, capitalising on an error by Javi Venta. The left back inexplicably allowed an early Giggs' cross to bounce by him allowing van Nistelrooy to score with a relfex diving header. The Red Devils ran rampant to finish the first half with a three goal lead that effectively eliminated the Primera Liga hopefuls. Giggs was in the thick of the action again in the 35th minute, crossing for an unmarked Wayne Rooney to covert with a precise downward header at the penalty spot. Two minutes later, Rooney won a penalty when he was brought down by Josico on another attack. Van Nistelrooy, who missed a penalty kick in Week 2 when the teams met at El Madrigal, made no mistake this time blasting right down the middle of Jose Reina's goal. At the break, Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Rooney with Steven Gerrard in a safe 4-5-1 formation, while Villareal switched to a 4-3-3 albeit to no avail. Their closest chance came in the 51st minute when former United failure Diego Forlan's header deflected off Wes Brown and inches wide of the left post. It was an unhappy return for the Uruguayan, constantly taunted by the home fans as his team hit an depressing low. More so after top scorer Juan Roman Riquelme secured a loose ball just inside the area only to send his effort wide of goal. At the other end midway through the second half, Gerrard was unlucky not to add is name to the scoresheet when van Nistelrooy unselfishly set him up on a two-on-one counter. But with Reina narrowing down the angle, the former Liverpool man's 18 yard sidefooter dribbled agonisingly wide of the right post. Four minutes later though, United did add a fourth when van Nistelrooy was the beneficiary of a Reina spill to convert his hat-trick and his seventh goal of the competition. Substitute Quinton Fortune whipped in a cross from the left that Scholes met on the volley from six yards. Although Reina did well to parry the point blank effort, the hat-trick hero was on cue for the rebound. He was replaced soon after to a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful, as the home team held on for a shutout win and abruptly end Villareal's European dream. With the scores level in the dying minutes, Kaka forced stand in keeper Quim into a save and looked set to secure the rebound when he was blatantly fouled by Luisao. Andrea Pirlo converted the spot kick to the bottom left, triggering a late attacking frenzy for last year's beaten finalists. Kaka was again unlucky not to score in the 87th minute, hitting the base of the left post after Marek Jankulovski's initial 18 yard effort was well palmed. Instead, it was his Brazilian compatriot and substitute Serginho that secured the points in the 89th minute with a miraculous strike from outside the box. Pirlo turned assister, setting up the winger from 22 yards and dipping a left foot half volley into the far corner. Quim could only stand and watch helplessly as the ball floated into the top right corner of his goal to seal Benfica's fate. Earlier in the match, AC Milan had originally opened the scoring when strike partners Andriy Shevchenko and Hernan Crespo combined with a quarter of an hour elapsed. The latter was the scorer from just outside the area, curling a low left footer between two defenders and tucking it into the bottom right corner. Dida kept his team in front in the 32nd minute with a stunning point blank save from a Nuno Gomes volley - the striker was also guilty of hitting the base of the post on the follow-up, albeit from a very sharp angle. Substitute Paulo Almeida almost restored parity on the hour mark with a 20 yard dipping volley that barely cleared the crossbar. But the hosts did find an equaliser just six minutes later when Carlitos was bungled down in the box by Jaap Stam, compouding an error-riddled campaign for the Dutch defender. Although he wasn't booked, Simao's fierce spot kick into the roof of the net was punishment enough for the former Manchester United and Lazio player. Despite that setback, AC Milan kept their resolve entering the final minutes to steal a victory. Both teams who are currently ranked second in their respective domestic leagues, will now head back to the drawing board ahead of next season's competition. Week 6, Day 2 - Group C Recap
GROUP C: Four-za Lyon - French champs strike Bremen down again
WERDER BREMEN...0 LYON....................1 Nilmar 45' French champions Olympique Lyon ended an otherwise subpar European season on a high note with a hard fought win over Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion. It's their fourth straight victory in two seasons over their German rivals, outscoring them 14-2 in the process. This meeting was much more evenly matched however, with Bremen outshooting their visitors. But Nilmar's lone strike in first half stoppage time was enough to secure the points. The Brazilian striker actually had his intial 19 yard attempt thwarted for a corner by goalkeeper Andreas Reinke. On the resulting set piece, the Bremen defence failed to deal with the corner, with Hatem Ben Arfa's 17 yard strike deflecting straight to Nilmar to bury the rebound. Two minutes after the break, Nilmar was amazingly close to netting his second with a powerful 18 yard volley. But his fierce effort from Benoit Pedretti's lay-off only bothered the side netting. His strike partner Milan Baros broke free from the half way line ten minutes later, but the 17 yard strike was well blocked by a chasing Frank Fahrenhorst and ricocheted inches over the bar. Bremen striker Nelson Valdez, who started ahead of Miroslav Klose, squandered two great chances in the final quarter of the match - firstly firing wide from 17 yards in the 70th minute, then hitting the post from 16 yards seven minutes later after brushing off defender Claudio Cacapa. It simply wasn't Bremen's day, or season for that matter, as they suffered a fifth loss ending the group stage with just one measly point.
