The ps3 does not have dedicated upscaler like the 360 does and it is a good one the 360 has
yep +1. was gonna say the exact same thing. if u have a natural 1080p tv and u pick 1080p as optimal res on x360, EVERYTHING will play in 1080p even apps like netflix and youtube. on ps3, you can force 1080p on some games by unchecking all res except for 480p and 1080p. but alot of games cant be forced and they will revert back to 480p since u dont have the 720p checked at the time.

because of that, it got to the point where it was annoying to have to keep playing with my settings when i switch gms cuz some couldnt be forced. i ended up re-checking the 720p box too cuz most would wanna revert back to 480p since they couldnt do 1080p. when i start my ps3, the main menu screen is 1080p/60p. almost all the games i play now on ps3 revert back to 720p naturally when i start them up (killzone3, socom4, madden 12, drake 3...off the top of my head).

My tv does the same thing too. At ps3 menu says 1080p when nba2k11, batman, god of war 3, etc. starts loading my tv says 720p. Don't like that.

1080p is not supported over component cables which is most likely the reason the OP was having issues.

I'm a bit confused. I have un-checked 720, and now my TV reads that the game is displayed in 1080, and looks 10x better than before I un-checked 720, but it is not 1080. Why would the TV tell me its 1080 if its not, and read 720 before I changed the options?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1342036932.842885.jpg

The TV is showing you what you are outputting from the console which is 1080P since you forced it.

And it does not look better on 1080p. Do you not see the horrible soft like picture that lacks details and resolution. I ran the game at 1080p and was not happy. It looks like watching a game thew foggy glasses

It is not true 1080p since the game cannot do 1080p

You are just buffering the image to 1080p which makes things worst in areas and slightly better in others. but the best all around resolution is the 720p plus it assures you of a smooth experience when playing.

Besides your tv also has a built in upscaler therefore when you have it at 720p it is upscaling to 1080p but it will say 720p because that little icon on the top left just shows what you are feeding the tv

Uh,yes it is...it's all dependent on whether or not the T.V can accept the signal or not.
I use to run my 360 into my 1080p tv with components before I got the hdmi xbox.

So I know for a fact in does indeed work.

Is your hdtv 1080p capable? Are you using a hdmi cable between the xbox to hdtv? Is your xbox 360 dashboard settings set to 1080P? I just keep my xbox settings at 720p..keeps the game running a bit smoother imho and the visual difference in upscaling is very very..hell unnoticeable with most games.

Xbox 360 does upscale to 1080P...but you gotta be using a hdmi cable and of course in the xbox dashboard settings set it to 1080p.

The Hana chip on the xbox 360 is a very VERY good upscale chip (hana chip)..better than what the ps3 can do actually. I have both machines by the way..i enjoy both consoles so no way am i being biased about this..aka a "fanboy" about it.

In a basic nutshell, the 360 has a full hardware scaler "CHIP" called Hana whereas the PS3 for some reason only has a horizontal scaler not its own dedicated scaler chip. Xbox 360 has superior upscale abilities.

It is best to run your games at 1080p on xbox to match the tv resolution for a better performance. Feeding it 720p makes the tv's upscaler have to work harder which hinders performance
