I highly doubt they will not throw that excuse out when the new "next gen" comes out. Cut expenses and features but the fans will still buy it because they always have...
The issue with this gen was the extreme difficulty in programming. It had a huge learning curve. The PS3 dev box was shipped with 13 instruction manuals. It's been compared, seriously, to rocket science.

If Microsoft (and specifically Sony) have learned from their errors, the next gen will be more user friendly from a development side. In turn we can see better games, more quickly

Ture they are sports games...but not football...and if they was one out there, I'am sure EA's sells would drop. But untill that happens...NCAA will be top dog...since there is no other dog in the yard.

Same thing with Madden. Only game in town. After Madden drops...where you think all the NCAA's that are at Gamestop go towards. They are bought for there "WOW" factor...and after 3-4 months have run dry.
NCAA's sales have dropped the past three years and are down over 60% since 2007. If other games aren't their competition where did those sales go?

If you read more than just the subject things might make a little more sense to you.

I think if you look at other sports games you'll see them dropping as well. The industry is just down.

Exactly right. I know people like to think that NCAA and Maddens sales are down because the quality is lower than it should be (in their view) and that is why but the simple fact is ALL game sales are down because in this down economy people only have so much expendable income that they can spend on games.

It's because of that I think it's silly to say that NCAA has no competition, every other quality game out there, sports or otherwise, is competing for dollars. Yes it may not have another NCAA game competing with but does one only compare Call of Duty Black Ops to other 1950's shooters or does one compare it to all first person shooters?

The simple fact is NCAA is now competing with such quality titles as Uncharted, Call of Duty, the latest Mario game, God of War, etc etc. and not even just other sports games.

MLB 12: The Show 720k
MLB 11: The Show 500k
MLB 10: The Show 680k
MLB 09: The Show 680k

NBA 2k12 4.3M
NBA 2k11 3.72M
NBA 2k10 1.69M

FIFA 12 10.07M
FIFA 11 8.32M
FIFA 10 6.07M

How do those games see year-over-year increases or remain relatively steady while NCAA sees a steady decline?

It has everything to do with the perception of the product. Go find reviews and compare to sales numbers. There is a direct correlation in poor reviews and loss of sales.

The consumer, as a whole, is smarter than many people give them credit for and they are researching before they buy more than ever.

As I said before, those games are NCAAs competitors and for every person who buys FIFA they probably are passing on NCAA. People only have so much expendable income.
