I always give walk-ons numbers that I consider "garbage". If they survive and make it to their Junior year, I "reward" them with a "better" number.

I'll stop there, but I have number and equipment rituals for every unit on the team. It definitely adds to the investment/immersion of your Dynasties.
I know you said you'll stop, but I'm just curious what are your number and equipment rituals for the different units.

Re: Special Players' Numbers

24 is the only number that is off limits. Every HB recruit ends up taking Nile's number so I am always changing this. I don't let anyone wear number 1. For some reason I don't like to throw the number 5 around too often. I think that has to do with Sedrick Shaw.

Re: Special Players' Numbers

For some reason, I love numbers that end in "7".

At QB, my most coveted numbers are 2, 3, 14-17.
If I have a bruising runningback, he may get to wear the coveted 27 or 37.
A big, smart middle linebacker gets to wear 47. He has to be a tackle to tackle general of the defense though.
Those are really my only truly special numbers.

Re: Special Players' Numbers

I've never worried that much about numbers, but after reading ya'lls rituals I think I'm going to try this out this year. I'll have to think of some numbers to use but I'm looking forward to it. Great thread.

Re: Special Players' Numbers

I play with Notre Dame the most but most of these traditions i use with every team.

#3 goes to top recruits, I won't switch that once I give it to someone.

I like to give a top Defensive End #1, a top Defensive Back 44, my best offensive lineman gets the coveted 53, my number in high school. I like to give WR's single digit numbers, and after this year if my QB doesn't get 3 as a recruit he's probably going to get 10.

If have a good core group (be in WRs, LBs, DBs) I usually will give them all clear visors like USC did with their receivers. As long as they are all good it just screams "Don't **** with us".

Re: Special Players' Numbers

When I start my dynasty. I don't give numbers away for the forst 3 years. After that I start my own traditions at the school. I like to make it more of a big deal than it is.

The players have to be "special" for me to assign the mubers, and there may be a 3 or 4 season span where no one wears the numbers but they are...

QB:12
HB/FB: 32
WR/TE: 9 (Peter Warrick inspired me)
OL: 72
DL:99
LB: 53
DB: 24

I just don't give them away, but if I think a guy is special I will assign him one of those numbers.

Re: Special Players' Numbers

At Illinois I don't usually give out to many special numbers but once I recruited a 6'8" 280 pound athlete and put him at running back because he was really fast. The first game he played which was Big Ten play he wore #31, we played Michigan and he destroyed them with 6 running touchdowns, after that we wore #77 in honor of Red Grange's performance against Michigan in the opening of Memorial Stadium.
