The only reason an X-Box without an HDMI output can upscale 720p to 1080i is because the two resolutions are practically the same. The difference is how the two resolutions are presented by your TV. Think of it as two different brands making the same product, with the "p" brand having an edge over the "i" brand. You can only get 1080p with an HDMI cable. 720p/1080i is the highest resolution you can aquire with the component cables.
