The passing game is a lot better than '04. It was "more fun" in '04 because it was insanely easy. I threw over 35 TD's every single year regardless of my QB's rating. And as for running, many people do not recognize the power of dives and blasts in this game. Sure, you may get hit after 2 yards, but you'll fall forward and end up with a 6 yard gain half the time. Not everything has to be flashy and long runs broken to the outside in this game, just like in real life. And NOTHING is sexier in this game than calling a simple dive play, following your FB through the hole and then juking one LB, spinning around a safety and going the distance for 6.
