questions about thru-pass and cancelling move

I notice that when I press a button (i.e. pass) BEFORE the player gets the ball, it performs and carries out the action. How do I cancel the action before the player receives it? It's very frustrating especially during breakaways or when I'm about to score.

Also, if I do a thru-pass and notice it will get intercepted, how do I cancel it so I can bring the recipient player to the ball before the oponent?
