Manual Passing and Power

For the past couple of years I've been playing with all manual controls on and off and there's one thing I've never been able to really figure out. How do I get that "zip" on the ball?

When you play on assisted, or even semi-assisted, the ball seems to move just a little bit faster than it does when using the manual controls for passing. Is there a trick to getting the ball to move that fast when using the manual controls?

I believe using one of the modifier buttons along with said pass button would increase power.
