NHL 10 Community Day Info: Be A Pro/Be A Tough Guy

Time to let loose with more info on NHL 10 from the Community Event back in May!

Be A Pro

As you’ve already seen in the demo, this year BAP kicks off with your participation in a prospect game. How you perform in the game will help determine where you are selected in the NHL draft. Once drafted, you’ll have a chance to perform with the big club before they decide to keep you or send you down to the AHL for some seasoning.

An addition to BAP this year is the ability to earn new equipment (skates, sticks, helmets, etc.) that your can purchase through a pro shop after you reach certain goals in your player’s development. It adds a RPG-type element to this year’s BAP.

While I didn’t spend much time in BAP while at the event, I will say that your teammate’s AI is much improved and you won’t feel that you have to carry the load as much as you did in NHL 09. The overall AI is much improved in NHL 10 and you will notice this while playing BAP as well.

Be A Tough Guy

A new player type that you can select when creating your player is the “Tough Guy”. If you choose this type of player, you will have different development goals as you evolve through your career (including different goals that will get you new equipment from the pro shop). On the ice you will be looked at to deliver big hits to help motivate your team, as well as to protect your superstars by fighting the other team’s tough guy if the situation arises. This role will look for you to shadow the opposing player to try and wear them down over the course of the game with your physical play.

“Be A Tough Guy” is a great new addition and is a new way to play BAP.

I will try to answer your questions on the above info as best I can, but please be advised that I didn’t spend a whole lot of time in these modes. The demo for the 360 has dropped for Gold members, and will soon be available for Silver members as well as the PS3 --- so you will be able to see hands-on what great changes have been made in NHL 10!

Awesome man! Do you know is there anything before the prospect game like a combine or something to tweak your draft position anymore? Can you be drafted lower like in the second round?

There wasn't a combine or anything like that in the build I played. Not sure on the lower than 1st round draft...didn't get to see if that happened or not.

In the demo when you get drafted you can't see the picks after yourself, in the build you played can you see all the draft picks if you want to?

It was the same as in the demo.

Does the Be A Pro mode have more content this time? Last year it was quite boring because you only had to play the matches but there wasn't any interviews and other things like that outside the matches.

I've heard that the Madden series' Superstar mode (or whatever it's called) has plenty of content in comparison with NHL's Be A Pro. So that got me wondering if there's anything like that added in this year's BaP...

Madden's Superstar mode is pretty canned and terrible, imo. The ideas are good, but it's not fleshed out at all. I actually had more fun with 09's BAP last year than I've had with Madden's mode.

BAP just needs contract terms. Your contract should be able to expire, and you can hit FA and pick from interested teams. When you get better and its time for a new contract, you should be able to attempt to get a no trade clause. In 09 your GM could trade you if you played poorly, but it'd be nice to be traded if your team was just loaded at the position and had a glaring hole elsewhere. The GM could ship you off in a package deal for something else. I'd also like to be able to demand a trade.

As far as IQ tests, interviews, and all that stuff... it's pretty lame in Madden and I'd rather do without it tbh.

No interviews or anything like that this year.
