Re: Rule problem

another infraction could be covering the puck / closing the hand on the puck in one's own crease with their goaltender pulled. That may not result in an automatic goal. Or possibly if the defender purposely dis-lodged the net.

That's right, there's no way of confusion, besides in ea's game there's no way of awarding a penalty other than by tripping a player on a breakway (I think, since you cannot throw a stick or dislodge a net on porpuse), so that's the issue the OP was referring to (automatic goal instead of penalty shot).

53.7 Awarded Goal - If, when the opposing goalkeeper has been removed, a member of the defending team, including theCoach or any non-playing person, throws or shoots any part of a stick or any other object or piece of equipment at the puck or puck carrier in the neutral or his own defending zone, thereby preventing the puck carrier from having a clear shot on an “open net”, a goal shall be awarded to the attacking side.

For the purpose of this rule, an “open net” is defined as one from which a goalkeeper has been removed for an additional attacking player. The goalkeeper is considered off the ice once the replacement player has entered the playing surface.

Re: Rule problem

So pretty much if you are skating right behind a guy going in on an empty net, slash, hook, trip the heck out of him because you can get your goalie back for the penalty shot, but if you throw your stick its in automatic goal.....

We concluded a few posts ago that if you trip/slash/hook/etc a guy on a breakaway with an empty net, then he would in fact be awarded and automatic goal. However EA is having difficulty programming this into the game, mostly with how the announcers/players on the ice would deal with it and celebrate. Also, there's no way in the NHL games to throw your stick/helmet/skate/children/etc at a puck or another player, unless that's an unannounced feature they added this year. So we only have to worry about tripping, hooking and slashing calls awarding penalty shots.

Personally I see the NHL rule contradicting itself, because it says in one part that the goalie would be allowed to return if a penalty shot is awarded with an empty net, but then other parts are saying it's an automatic goal. But I'm not a ref yet so I have time to figure the rule out... if I ever do...
