TNK - BOSTON BRUINS FRANCHISE

Game #1 of Season
Chicago Blackhawks @ Boston Bruins

RECAP
The Bruins open the 2023/2024 season at TD Garden against the Chicago Blackhawks and rookie phenom Connor Bedard. Chicago is coming off a victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in their opener last night. The Bruins had early pressure as they worked the puck around the offensive zone before 19 year old rookie Matthew Poitras opened the scoring just 2:23 into his NHL debut as he skated out of the corner into the high slot and fired a wrist shot past Petr Mrazek giving Boston a 1-0 lead. The Bruins came right back a few minutes later with another goal as Charlie McAvoy broke up a rush by Ryan Donato before transitioning the puck up to Pavel Zacha for an odd man rush and he would pass to Brad Marchand who dished the puck right back to Zacha for a beautiful goal to give Boston a 2-0 lead just 5:15 into the game. The Blackhawks started to find their game midway through the period and began to generate scoring chances but Linus Ullmark was sharp in the Boston net and the score remained 2-0 as the clock ticked down to the final 5:00 of the period. The 1st period came to an end with the Bruins leading 2-0 and holding a 12-7 edge in shots through 20 minutes

The Blackhawks came out flying to begin the 2nd and had a number of chances in the early stages of the period but the score remained 2-0. Both Mrazek and Ullmark made huge stops to keep the score 2-0 as we neared the midway mark of the period as Mrazek denied Marchand who got past the D at one end while Chicago went the other way with Nick Foligno sending in Lukas Reichel all alone but he was denied by Ullmark on a partial breakaway. The Bruins added to their lead when Mrazek stopped a James Van Riemsdyk chance but Charlie Coyle would poke the puck over the goal line to extend the Bruins lead to 3-0 with 11:16 left in the period. The Blackhawks were controlling play in the period and now had a 20-18 edge in shots when Jakub Lauko was called for tripping to put Chicago on the PP with 5:26 remaining in the 2nd period. Chicago would cash in on the man advantage as Lukas Reichel beat Ullmark for a PP goal to cut the Bruins lead to 3-1 with 4:12 left in the 2nd period. Chicago came right back with another goal less than a minute later as Kevin Korchinski kept the puck in and moved it to Seth Jones who passed to Jason Dickinson and he would snap a shot past Ullmark to make it a one goal game cutting the lead to 3-2 with 3:27 left in the period. Mrazek and Ullmark would each make clutch saves in the final minutes and the 2nd period would come to an end with the Bruins leading 3-2 and the Blackhawks now holding a 29-22 advantage in shots after out-shooting the Bruins 22-9 in the 2nd period

The Bruins and Blackhawks would begin the 3rd period with Boston holding a 3-2 lead as the stage was set for what should be an exciting final 20 minutes. The Bruins came out with good energy to begin the 3rd period and were buzzing the Chicago net but Mrazek was able to keep the puck out of the net and also got some help from the posts as Matthew Poitras rang the pipe with a shot and the score remained 3-2. The Blackhawks survived the early flurry from Boston and would get the equalizer when a Jared Tinordi shot hit Andreas Athanasiou on its way to the net and the puck would bounce around in front as Matt Grzelcyk could not control it before the puck went right back onto the stick of Athanasiou who jammed it home to tie the game 3-3 with 13:39 remaining. The score remained tied at 3-3 and we were headed for a thrilling finish as the clock ticked down to the final 10:00 of regulation. The Bruins would retake the lead moments later as Derek Forbort made a nice defensive play to break up Athanasiou on the rush leading to a chance the other way as Pastrnak gathered the loose puck and passed to Marchand who took the puck wide beating Korchinski and took it strong to the net where he would slip it past Mrazek for a big goal to give Boston a 4-3 lead with 8:12 remaining. The Blackhawks tried to answer as they generated some good chances on the next few shifts but Ullmark would make some big saves denying Connor Bedard, Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson as the clock ticked down to the final 5:00 of regulation with Boston clinging to a 4-3 lead. Athanasiou had another great chance with just under 3:00 to play as he walked in but was denied on an excellent pad save by Ullmark. Chicago was pushing hard for the equalizer as they trailed 4-3 with the clock ticking under 2:00 to play. Brandon Carlo would dump the puck down into the Chicago end as we entered the final minute of play and the Blackhawks would come up the ice on the rush with Korchinski threading a pass to Taylor Raddysh for a chance but Ullmark would make a nice save and freeze the puck for a faceoff 0:43 remaining. The Bruins would use their timeout to get the guys they want on the ice a little rest as they look to close out the final 43 seconds. The Blackhawks would pull Mrazek for the extra attacker and line up for the upcoming offensive zone faceoff skating 6 against 5. Chicago won the ensuing draw

NOTES
* The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and were leading 3-0 midway through the 2nd period before the Blackhawks came alive and scored 3 unanswered goals to tie the game 3-3. The Bruins would get the game winner from Brad Marchand with 8:12 left and Boston would hang on for a hard fought 4-3 victory on opening night

* The Bruins improve to 1-0-0 while the Blackhawks fall to 1-1-0 on the season

* The Bruins goals were scored Matthew Poitras, Pavel Zacha, Charlie Coyle and Brad Marchand

* The Blackhawks goals were scored by Lukas Reichel, Jason Dickinson and Andreas Athanasiou

* Linus Ullmark made 39 saves on 42 shots for Boston including some big time stops late in the 3rd period to protect the 4-3 lead while Petr Mrazek stopped 29 of 33 shots for Chicago

* The Bruins lost Trent Frederic to injury as he left the game with a strained hamstring and the injury is not serious as Frederic is expected to be back in about a week. Patrick Brown will step into the lineup replacing Frederic and will skate on the 4th line with Lucic & Beecher while Jakub Lauko slides up to join Van Riemsdyk & Coyle on the 3rd line

* The Bruins will remain at home for their next game as the Nashville Predators come to TD Garden with a record of 1-1-0 through their first two games. Jeremy Swayman will get the start in net for Boston making his first appearance of the season

TNK - BOSTON BRUINS FRANCHISE

Game #2 of Season
Nashville Predators (1-1-0) @ Boston Bruins (1-0-0)

RECAP
The Predators had a glorious scoring chance in the opening minute as Ryan O'Reilly sent in Gustav Nyquist all alone but Jeremy Swayman made an outstanding pad save to keep the game scoreless. The Bruins settled in and were controlling play before Patrick Brown who was seeing his first action of the season was called for tripping to put Nashville on the PP with 13:22 left in the period. The Bruins PK unit did a great job and Boston would get back to even strength as we neared the midway mark of the 1st period. The Bruins would open the scoring with 8:08 left in the period when the Predators won a defensive zone faceoff and Ryan McDonagh passed to Luke Schenn as Nashville started up ice only to have the puck poked away by Hampus Lindholm in the neutral zone where James Van Riemsdyk picked it up to create an odd man rush and he would set up Jakub Lauko for the goal to give Boston a 1-0 lead. Derek Forbort took a slashing minor to put Nashville back on the PP with 5:20 left and was more than half way through the penalty kill when Pavel Zacha sent Tomasino into the Predators bench but was called for elbowing to make it a brief two man advantage. The Bruins killed off the remaining 29 seconds left on the original penalty to Forbort and Boston would get back to even strength as Morgan Geekie laid down in front of a Tyson Barrie shot and the puck would sail out of play with under 2:00 left in the period. The 1st period would come to an end with the Bruins leading 1-0 and holding a 9-7 edge in shots

The Predators went back to the PP just under two minutes into the 2nd period on a tripping call against Pavel Zacha and they would need just 11 seconds to make the Bruins pay as they won the ensuing faceoff in the offensive zone and Roman Josi would tee up a one timer from up top that Philip Tomasino tipped on the way in beating Swayman on the deflection to tie the game up 1-1 with 17:56 to play in the period. The Bruins would answer right back on an excellent play from Matt Grzelcyk as he took a pass from McAvoy to start the rush up ice and Grzelcyk would hit the jets as he carried the puck through the neutral zone and found a seam as he kept the puck on his stick end to end beating Saros to give the Boston a 2-1 lead with 16:35 left. Swayman made a pair of excellent saves at the midway mark of the period as he denied Filip Forsberg from the slot with a nice pad save and absolutely robbed Nyquist on the rebound from the seat of his pants as he lunged to his left and got a glove on the puck for an incredible stop keeping the Bruins in the lead at 2-1. Boston would score just over a minute later as they had good pressure in the offensive zone and the puck was down behind the Nashville net when it squirted loose to Milan Lucic for his first goal back in a Bruins uniform to extend the Bruins lead to 3-1 with 8:39 left in the period. Nashville answered right back capitalizing on a bad turnover by Patrick Brown as Tomasino was denied by Swayman on the initial shot but Jonathan Toews collected the rebound and scored to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 8:03 left. Penalties to Van Riemsdyk and Forbort put Nashville on the PP again late in the period and Tomasino had a chance to tie it with just over 3:00 left in the period but was robbed on a great stop by Swayman who froze the puck for a faceoff. The Bruins would kill off the penalties and get back to even strength and the 2nd period would come to an end with the Bruins holding a 3-2 lead and the shots were 21-18 in favor of Nashville through two periods

The Bruins and Predators would begin the 3rd period with Boston leading 3-2 and looking for a solid effort in the final 20 minutes. Boston would go on their first PP of the night just 21 seconds into the 3rd period as Ryan O'Reilly was called for slashing. The Bruins would win the ensuing faceoff and set up on the PP with Marchand holding the puck along the wall before cycling down low to Pavel Zacha who came out of the corner and snapped a shot past Saros blocker side for a huge PP goal pushing the Bruins lead back to two goals at 4-2 with 19:22 remaining. Saros made a great save to with just under 15:00 left to deny Geekie off a great feed from Poitras and Kiefer Sherwood would be called for tripping to put Boston back on the PP with 14:04 left to play. The Bruins through they extended the lead to 5-2 with 12:33 left as Matthew Poitras made a nice move cutting to the net but Saros made the save and the puck was loose in the crease as Jake DeBrusk took multiple whacks at it before the puck eventually crossed the line but the referee waived off the goal and ruled goaltender interference which had the TD Garden crowd angry as the boos rained down at the officials. The Predators would wind up killing off the penalty to Sherwood and returning to even strength with 12:04 left. The clock would tick down to the final 10:00 of regulation with Boston in control leading 4-2. Boston would add a big insurance goal with 5:42 remaining when Brandon Carlo rushed the puck into the offensive zone and his pass to Lauko hit a skate and came right back to him allowing him to shoot the puck with Saros off balance for a goal to push the lead to 5-2. The final minutes would wind down and the Bruins hang on to win 5-2 and improve to 2-0-0 on the season

TNK - BOSTON BRUINS FRANCHISE

Game #3 of Season
Boston Bruins (2-0-0) @ San Jose Sharks (1-1-1)

RECAP
The Bruins and Sharks each had good chances in the opening minutes but Linus Ullmark and Mackenzie Blackwood would each make big early saves to keep the game scoreless. Boston went on the PP 2:18 into the game after Filip Zadina was called for cross checking but had some good looks on the man advantage but couldn't convert and the Sharks returned to even strength. San Jose opened the scoring on just their 2nd shot of the night when Mike Hoffman entered the offensive zone with speed and dished to Tomas Hertl in the high slot and Hertl would beat Ullmark blocker side to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead with 12:21 remaining in the 1st period. The Bruins responded a couple minutes later as Brandon Carlo laid out Mikael Granlund with a huge open ice hit and Boston would head the other way with Jake DeBrusk carrying the puck deep into the offensive zone before cutting to the net front and beating Blackwood who attempted to sweep check the puck away from DeBrusk who scored his 1st goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 with 10:05 left. The score remained tied until late in the period when Ullmark made a save to deny Hoffman who would be muscled off the puck in the corner by Derek Forbort who swung behind his own net and hit a long stretch pass to Milan Lucic who had a step on Matt Benning for a partial breakaway and did a great job to shield the puck before moving it to his backhand and beating Blackwood to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead with 2:44 left in the 1st period. The Bruins would go on a 5 on 3 PP as Granlund and Hertl were each called for tripping 14 seconds apart with a little under 2:00 left in the period. The Bruins went to work on the two man advantage and had several looks but Blackwood made a number of saves keeping it a 2-1 game and froze the puck with 0:23 left. The Sharks won the ensuing faceoff to the right of Blackwood but Zacha would pressure Benning in the corner forcing a turnover as Marchand collected the puck along the wall and played it back down low to Zacha who fired a one touch cross ice pass to James Van Riemsdyk who fired a one timer past Blackwood for a beautiful PP goal making it 3-1 with 0:12 left. The Bruins remained on the PP and the 1st period would come to an end with Boston leading 3-1 and out-shooting San Jose 22-6 after 20 minutes

The Bruins still had 36 seconds of PP time carrying overt to the 2nd period but the Sharks would kill it off and get back to even strength. San Jose was controlling play in the opening minutes of the 2nd period and had some quality chances but Ullmark was sharp in the Boston net keeping it a 3-1 game. Morgan Geekie and Brandon Carlo were called for penalties 34 seconds apart to put the Sharks on a 5 on 3 PP with just under 15:00 let in the period. San Jose would convert with the two man advantage as Hertl carried the puck through the neutral zone and hit Alexander Barabanov who split the D and beat Ullmark to cut the Bruins lead to 3-2 with 13:29 left in the period. San Jose remained on the PP but Boston would kill it off and we would pass the midway mark of the 2nd period with the Bruins leading 3-2. David Pastrnak was called for tripping to put San Jose back on the PP with 7:37 left in the period but the Bruins got some solid work from the PK unit to kill it off and get back to even strength with 5:37 left. The Sharks kept applying pressure and would knot things up a minute later when they had the Bruins scrambling in their own end and Luke Kunin would fire a quick shot that broke through Ullmark and trickled in to tie the game 3-3 with 4:27 remaining in the 2nd period. Blackwood made his biggest stop of the night when John Beecher split the D but couldn't finish as Blackwood did not bite on the deke with under a minute to play. The 2nd period ended with the score now tied 3-3 and the shots were 32-18 in favor of Boston

The Bruins and Sharks would head to the 3rd period with the score even at 3-3 with 20 minutes left to decide what has been a hard fought hockey game through two periods. The Bruins were a little sloppy to begin the period and Morgan Geekie was called for tripping to put San Jose on the PP with 14:49 left. The Sharks were at the tail end of the PP opportunity when the Ullmark made a great save to deny Barabanov on the rush but the puck would find its way to Kevin Labanc who was stoned by Ullmark on his first and second chances but was able to stuff the puck under Ullmark on the 3rd try for a huge PP goal giving San Jose a 4-3 lead with 12:58 left in regulation. The Bruins now found themselves trailing 4-3 and we would enter the final 10:00 with Boston searching for the game tying goal. The Bruins would get a big PP opportunity when William Eklund would go to the box for tripping with 7:58 to play and Boston had very good puck movement to create some good looks on the PP but Blackwood came up big in the San Jose net and the Sharks would survive the PK as the score remained 4-3 with under 6:00 to play. The Bruins would fins themselves shorthanded when Poitras was called for slashing with 3:57 remaining but the Bruins would kill it off and get back to even strength with 1:57 to play. Blackwood would freeze the puck for a faceoff and the Bruins would use their timeout with 1:37 remaining in regulation trailing 4-3. The Bruins would get Ullmark to the bench for the extra attacker coming out of the timeout with a faceoff coming up in the offensive zone skating 6 against 4 and looking for the equalizer. The Bruins had the Sharks scrambling in the defensive zone as Boston was putting pucks to the net in the final minute but the referee called Marchand for cross checking with 0:39 to play. The Bruins would get the puck down into the offensive zone but Coyle was denied on a wraparound bid and the Sharks would get the puck out and the horn would sound as the Bruins lose a heart breaker to the Sharks 4-3

NOTES
* The Bruins jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the 1st period but the Sharks bounced back with a strong 2nd period to tie the game up 3-3 heading into the 3rd period. San Jose would get a goal from Kevin Labanc with just under 13:00 left and the Bruins were unable to get the equalizer as the Sharks come from 3-1 down to beat the Bruins 4-3

* The Bruins open the road trip with a loss to fall to 2-1-0 while the Sharks improve to 2-1-1 on the season

* The Bruins goals came from Jake DeBrusk (1), Milan Lucic (2) and James Van Riemsdyk (1)

* The Bruins inserted Ian Mitchell into the lineup on defense taking the place of Kevin Shattenkirk on the 3rd pairing with Derek Forbort.

* The Bruins are battling the injury bug early in the season as LW Jake DeBrusk left the game in the 3rd period with a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out of the lineup for a week or so. The good news for Boston is that Trent Frederic is expected to return in their next game at Los Angeles after we was injured on opening night

* The Bruins will travel have a day off tomorrow before they continue this road trip against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena. The Kings are currently 2-2-20 on the season and will be without Philip Danault who suffered a separated shoulder in their last game

RECAP
The Bruins went on the PP just under 2 minutes into the game with Drew Doughty going to the box for slashing. The Bruins were struggling to create chances with the man advantage but would cash in at the tail end of the PP when James Van Riemsdyk found Pavel Zacha in the high slot and his initial shot was stopped by Cam Talbot but Zacha would collect his own rebound and score to give Boston a 1 -0 lead 3:35 into the game. The Kings responded with a strong shift as they kept the puck in the Bruins end for close to a minute and had some good chances but Jeremy Swayman made the stops and froze the puck to calm things down. David Pastrnak was called for tripping to put the Kings on their first PP of the night with 12:35 left in the period and Brad Marchand was called for cross checking to put the Kings on a two man advantage for with 12:00 left in the period and 1:25 left on the original penalty to Pastrnak. Los Angeles went to work on the 5 on 3 PP but the Bruins would survive thanks to some good work by the PK unit and a couple of saves by Swayman as the Bruins return to even strength with 10:00 left in the 1st period. Boston would extend the lead when Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie combined to knock Vladislav Gavrikov off the puck along the boards and Geekie found Matthew Poitras in the high slot and he would beat Talbot with a quick shot for his 2nd goal of the season to make it 2-0 with 8:23 left in the period. Los Angeles answered just 24 seconds later as Swayman made a save to deny Blake Lizotte and appeared to rob TJ Tynan with a desperation save on the rebound but the puck would drop and just trickle over the line for the 1st career NHL goal for Tynan making it 2-1 with 7:59 to play in the 1st period. The Kings dominated the final 5 minutes of the period and had heavy pressure in the offensive zone after a penalty to Milan Lucic put LA on the PP but Swayman was standing on his head in the Bruins net and the 1st period came to a close with Boston leading 2-1 despite being out-shot 16-8 in the period

The Bruins looked to get back to playing smart disciplined hockey to start the 2nd period after a sloppy 1st period and they would do just that as they controlled the puck in the offensive zone and Talbot would stop a point shot from Kevin Shattenkirk but Poitras was there to swat the rebound out of the air and into the net for his 2nd goal of the game giving Boston a 3-1 lead with 15:36 left to play in the 2nd period. The Kings went to the PP with just over 12:00 remaining but Boston would kill it off with some solid work from the PK unit and we would pass the midway mark of the 2nd period with the Bruins leading 3-1. Morgan Geekie left the game with an injury after he was hit by a shot from Matt Roy. Swayman continued his strong play in net as he made key saves Anze Kopitar and Quinton Byfield to keep it a 3-1 game as the clock wound down to the final 5:00 of the 2nd period. Los Angeles went back to the PP when Zacha was called for slashing with just over 4:00 left but the Bruins would kill it off and get back to even strength with 2:12 remaining. The 2nd period would come to an end with the Bruins leading 3-1 despite the Kings carrying the play for much of the game and out-shooting the Bruins 33-19 through 40 minutes of play

The Bruins took a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period thanks to stellar goaltending from Jeremy Swayman as they have been outplayed by the Kings for the majority of the game and Boston will need to be ready as Los Angeles is sure to come out with a strong push as they look to cut into the Bruins lead and come from behind in the final 20 minutes. The Bruins got off to a strong start to the 3rd period as they controlled the first 5 minutes of the period and were out-shooting the Kings 8-0 to start the period as the score remained 3-1 with under 12:00 to play. The Bruins continued to control play as we approached the midway mark of the 3rd period and the Kings had yet to put a shot on net. Los Angeles would catch a break as Jakub Lauko was called for hooking to put the Kings on the PP with 10:26 remaining in regulation. The Kings would get their first shot of the period on a long slap shot from Doughty that Swayman stopped and froze the puck for a faceoff with 9:38 left. The Bruins PK unit came up with another big kill and Boston returned to even strength with 8:26 remaining. The shots in the 3rd period were now 10-2 in favor of Boston who was playing an excellent 3rd period and Boston would go to the PP when Jordan Spence was called for tripping with 5:28 to play. The Bruins had good puck movement with the man advantage but failed to convert on the PP but just as the Kings got back to even strength Marchand would pass to Van Riemsdyk who came into the offensive zone with speed and hit a streaking Pavel Zacha with a perfect pass to the far post for his 2nd goal of the night to put the game away extending the Bruins lead to 4-1 with 3:23 left. The Bruins would add another goal with 1:27 remaining when Matt Grzelcyk shot from the point broke through Talbot to make it 5-1. Thanks pal....typing all this stuff out and capturing the highlights can be a pain and causes games to take longer, but I feel it's important to show how the sliders play and to validate the sliders impact

Soon I will begin doing smaller/shorter recaps but will continue the box scores and highlights so that folks can see how the sliders play and the results they produce long term over the course of the season

The Bruins and Ducks meet for an early season clash between two teams who are off to strong starts as the Bruins come in at 3-1-0 while the Ducks are 3-0-1 through their first 4 games. The Ducks are without their star goalie John Gibson to injury in their last game and have 21 year old Calle Clang in net making his NHL debut after being called up from San Diego of the AHL. Clang was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2020 draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins and was acquired via trade by the Ducks as part of the return for Rickard Rakell in March 2022

RECAP
The Bruins and Ducks each had excellent scoring chances in the early stages of the 1st period as Matthew Poitras walked in alone but was denied by Calle Clang while Frank Vatrano was stopped on a breakaway bid by Linus Ullmark and the game remained scoreless with the shots even at 4-4 with 14:00 left in the period. The Bruins opened the scoring a few minutes later when Brad Marchand carried the puck wide into the offensive zone and found David Pastrnak trailing in the high slot and he would fire a laser past Clang for his 1st goal of the season giving Boston a 1-0 lead with 11:14 left in the 1st period. Vatrano was called for tripping to put Boston on the PP with a little under 9:00 left in the period and the Bruins would cash in as McAvoy won a race to a loose puck and started the transition up ice where Charlie Coyle would make a nice pass to Danton Heinen who had a step on the defender and Heinen would beat Clang with a move to his backhand for a PP goal putting Boston up 2-0 with 7:48 remaining. Ullmark made a big save to deny Troy Terry but Milan Lucic would go to the box for holding putting Anaheim on their first PP of the night with 5:31 left but it was short lived as Ryan Strome slashed Charlie Coyle 19 seconds into the PP and the teams would skate 4 on 4. Both teams had great chances while skating 4 on 4 as Ullmark denied Killorn at one end of the ice and the play would quickly head the other way where Clang made two huge saves on Zacha and Pastrnak keeping it a 2-0 game. The teams returned to 5 on 5 play and the Ducks had a scoring chance off a Bruins turnover with just over a minute to play in the period but Ullmark would make a clutch save on the shot by Ryan Strome and the 1st period would come to a close with the Bruins leading 2-0 and the shots even at 13-13 after 20 minutes

The Ducks would get on the board in the opening minute of the 2nd period as Alex Killorn came up the wing and sent the puck into the slot where Zacha would break up the pass but Troy Terry was able to knock the puck over to Trevor Zegras for the tap in goal making it 2-1 game just 0:40 into the period. The Ducks were buzzing after the Zegras goal and controlled play in the opening 5 minutes of the period but Ullmark made a couple big saves to keep it a 2-1 game and the Bruins 4th line of Lucic-Beecher-Brown would put together a strong shift to change the momentum. Boston survived the early surge from Anaheim and would push the lead back to two goals as Charlie McAvoy had his slap shot blocked by Vatrano and the puck would go to James Van Riemsdyk who fired a wrist shot that broke through Clang to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead with 12:31 left in the period. Ullmark made an incredible string of saves as he kicked out a shot by Strome before sprawling out across his crease to absolutely rob Lundstrom and Strome on the second & third chances keeping it a 3-1 game with 11:00 left in the period. The Ducks would score to make it a one goal game when Terry won a battle along the boards and moved the puck back to Zegras who took a slap shot that broke through Ullmark for his 2nd goal of the night cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 9:36 still to play in the 2nd period. The Bruins answered right back less than a minute later as Clang denied Poitras but Trent Frederic would collect the loose puck and fired a shot past Clang for his 1st goal of the season pushing the Boston lead back to two goals at 4-2 with 9:05 left. Brock McGinn was sent to the box for holding to put Boston on the PP with just over 5:00 left. The Bruins got set up in the offensive zone and worked the puck up top to McAvoy and his point shot was deflected by Pavel Zacha for a PP goal making it 5-2 with 3:54 left in the period. The 2nd period came to an end with Boston leading 5-2 and holding a 33-27 edge in shots

The Bruins began the 3rd period with a 5-2 lead looking to play a solid 20 minutes defensively and hand the Ducks their first regulation loss of the season while Anaheim was looking to get an early goal or two and start a 3rd period comeback. Mark Pysyk took a slashing penalty just under 4:00 into the 3rd period to put Boston on the PP and Charlie McAvoy beat Clang with a rocket from the high slot for the Bruins 3rd PP goal of the game making it 6-2 with 15:15 remaining. The Ducks generated 18 shots in the 3rd period but Ullmark was excellent in the late stages of the game and made a flurry of saves with under 2:00 remaining in the game and the Bruins would finish off an impressive 6-2 road win over the Ducks

NOTES
* The Bruins were on the second night of back to back games after beating the Kings 5-1 last night and they would cruise to a 6-2 victory over the Ducks

* The Bruins improve to 4-1-0 while the Ducks suffer their first regulation loss falling to 3-1-1 on the season

* The Bruins were led by a 3 point night from Charlie McAvoy as he scored a goal (1) and recorded 2 assists. Boston also got goals from Pavel Zacha (5), James Van Riemsdyk (2), David Pastrnak (1), Danton Heinen (1) and Trent Frederic (1)

* The Ducks goals were both scored by Trevor Zegras (2 & 3)

* Linus Ullmark made 43 saves on 45 shots for Boston while Calle Clang got the start in net for Anaheim making his NHL debut as he was just called up after Ducks star goalie John Gibson suffered a sprained ankle in their previous game. Clang would make 39 saves on 45 shots for Anaheim and had some impressive moments in his debut despite allowing 6 goals

* Pavel Zacha and James Van Riemsdyk are having excellent starts to their season for Boston. Zacha leads the Bruins with 5 goals in 5 games while Van Riemsdyk leads the team with 8 points (2 goals & 6 assists) after joining the Bruins on a 1 year / $1 million deal in the offseasom

* The Bruins are 2-1-0 through the first 3 games of this 4 game road trip and will travel to Chicago to wrap up the trip against Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks at United Center. The Blackhawks are currently 2-4-0 on the season

RECAP
The Bruins were carrying the play in the early stages and were nearing the midway mark of a scoreless 1st period when Pavel Zacha was called for holding to put Chicago on the games first PP with 11:46 remaining in the period. The Blackhawks managed just 1 shot on the man advantage but Matt Grzelcyk was called for slashing just after the Bruins returned to even strength to send Chicago right back to the PP with 9:23 left. The Blackhawks were creating more pressure on this PP opportunity but Jeremy Swayman was sharp in the Bruins net denying Josh Bailey and Connor Bedard as Chicago attacked the net in close leading to a hooking call against Danton Heinen with 26 seconds left on the penalty to Grzelcyk to put Chicago on an abbreviated 5 on 3 PP. The Boston PK unit did a great job and minimized the quality chances by Chicago and the Bruins would return to even strength with a little under 6:00 left in the period and the game still scoreless. The teams were skating 5 on 5 and play started to open up with scoring chances for both teams in the final 5:00 of the period but Swayman and Mrazek were on their game and the 1st period came to an end with the score tied 0-0 with shots 12-9 in favor of Chicago

The Bruins got off to a great start to the 2nd period as James Van Riemsdyk hit Zacha with a nice cross ice pass to send him in alone but Mrazek made the save. The Bruins kept the puck in the zone and worked it around to Hampus Lindholm who fired a shot from the point that was deflected in for a goal by Pavel Zacha to give Boston a 1-0 lead just 0:48 into the 2nd period. Matthew Poitras took a hooking penalty to put Chicago on the PP with just under 18:00 left but the Bruins would kill it off with another successful PK and get back to even strength. The Bruins increased their lead to two goals a short while later when Danton Heinen entered the offensive zone and was pinned to the wall by Filip Roos but Charlie McAvoy made a great play as he pinched in to keep possession for Boston as he came away with the puck and took it to the net where he was denied on the backhand by Mrazek before collecting his rebound and scoring on the second chance to extend the Bruins lead to 2-0 with 12:25 left in the period. The Blackhawks answered right back off a brutal turnover ommitted by Kevin Shattenkirk who came around his own net and had his pass intercepted by Connor Bedardo fired a quick shot beating Swayman to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 10:59 to play in the period. Shattenkirk was sent to the box for tripping a couple minutes later for tripping to put the Blackhawks on another PP with a chance to tie the game. Chicago has a couple chances on the PP but Swayman made the saves and the Bruins come up with another successful PK keeping the score 2-1. The Bruins would push the lead back to two goals when Mrazek denied Pastrnak but Van Riemsdyk would move the puck back to McAvoy who fired a rocket that was tipped by Zacha for his 2nd of the night on a beautiful deflection goal to give Boston a 3-1 lead with 5:40 remaining in the period. The Bruins would go on their first PP of the night when Bedard was called for slashing with 2:50 left but McAvoy would be called for hooking near the tail end of the PP and the teams would skate 32 seconds of 4 on 4 play before Chicago went on the PP with under a minute to play in the period. The 2nd period came to an end with Boston leading 3-1 and holding a 24-17 edge in shots

The Blackhawks would begin the 3rd period trailing 3-1 with 38 seconds of PP time carrying over on the penalty to McAvoy but the Bruins would get back to even strength with 19:22 to play. Chicago would generate a couple of good scoring chances for Colin Blackwell but Swayman would make a nice save to deny him on both opportunities and the score remained 3-1 with a little over 17:00 to play. The Bruins would add a big insurance goal a couple minutes later as Jakub Lauko passed to Trent Frederic in the high slot and Frederic would snap a shot past Mrazek to make it 4-1 with 15:31 remaining in regulation. The physicality picked up and tempers started to flare as Connor Murphy delievered a huge open ice hit on Pastrnak that sent him slowly back to the bench and the Bruins responded seconds later with Charlie Coyle and Derek Forbort combining to lay out Andreas Athanasiou. Chicago went to the PP near the midway mark of the period on a tripping call against John Beecher and the Blackhawks would convert quickly as they won the ensuing offensive zone faceoff and Swayman stopped a slap shot by Corey Perry but Taylor Raddysh was right on the door step to score on the rebound cutting the deficit to 4-2 with 10:28 left in regulation. The Blackhawks suddenly had momentum and the crowd was alive as we entered the final 10:00 of regulation with Chicago looking to come from behind. Swayman came up with a big save to deny Taylor Hall with 7:25 remaining and Raddysh would wind up being called for slashing to put Boston on the PP with 6:26 left to play. The Bruins had good puck movement on the PP but failed to score as the Blackhawks returned to even strength with under 5:00 left to play. Poitras had a great chance at one end but was denied by Mrazek and Seth Jones got the puck in the slot at the other end but his shot was turned away by Swayman with just over 2:00 to play keeping the score 4-2 before the puck would eventually go out of play to stop the clock with 1:48 remaining. Chicago had offensive zone pressure as the clock ticked under 1:00 to play and Swayman denied Jason Dickinson with a nice save but McAvoy was called for holding to put Chicago on the PP with 0:42 remaining. The Bruins would use their timeout as the Blackhawks would pull Mrazek with the upcoming PP and a faceoff coming in the Boston end and skate 6 on 4. Taylor Hall had a quality chance with 0:24 left and Chicago would go offside with under 10 seconds left setting up a neutral zone faceoff and the Bruins would hang on to win 4-2

NOTES
* The Bruins play a good road game and get 2 goals from Pavel Zacha along with a solid performance in net from Jeremy Swayman to beat the Blackhawks 4-2
