Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

Hey all. Thought I'd throw may hat in the ring as I'm having a lot of fun with this game. To qualify my sliders values below, it's the first time I've been back to the NHL series in about 5 years or so. I saw the $30 price tag on Boxing Day so it was as good a time as any to return. I'm basically re-learning how to play the game again, but I'm making progress.

I've been pleasantly surprised early on with the gameplay. I'm spending a lot of time creating classic teams and trying to nail down sliders but I think I have a winning combination for my tastes below using TNK's set as a base.

I always fiddle with the goalie reaction, shot and pass accuracy as I feel these elements drive satisfactory results. I also give myself a slight advantage on the skating to nullify the blazing CPU passing attack and to chase down pucks. As we all know, the penalties are broken, but I find with penalty frequency set at 2, I get 3-4 PP a game for each team which is fine. I like periods at 8 minutes for very realistic stats. I have 4 goals scored a game in total (on average) in about 10 games played. I'd like to see a few more so I'm not done tinkering. Away, enough babbling. Give them a try if you're looking for a set.

Re: Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

Seems like a solid set,not very far from my own.
I like that you (like me ) have goalies set quite low,and have a higher shooting accuracy for the Cpu.
I play manual passing and have CPU passing accuracy much lower (15 I think)
Plus puck control at 15 for the Cpu,gets them around 70-75% in passing.

But seems like a solid set

Hey thanks. Yeah I'm thinking of dropping the frenetic CPU passing but if you play a positionally sound game in your zone, many of their shots can be kept to the perimeter. I'll keep those values you mentioned in mind.

Re: Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

Yeah it's a tricky balance.
Go too low on CPU passing/puck controll and they just pass the the puck around and don't shoot.
I skipped last year's game,but I'm really liking 19,with a good setup it's very challenging and fun
Let me know how you're getting along with the game and you're set pal

Re: Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

I made a few slight changes on my set. Keep in mind these aren't for everyone. If you're a more experienced player, my lean toward human may make my sliders too easy. If you're new to the game or just getting back to it (first time in 6+years ago for me), you might like these.

My last two games were my best yet with my changes. I won 6-0 with the 1981-82 Islanders over the current day Penguins but lost 3-2 with the 1987-88 Bruins against the defending Stanley Cup champs. Getting some fights now that I changed the overall penalties from 2 to 3 along with a few more PPs.

The increase in goals is the nicest change I've experienced. I'm creating classic 80s teams and there was plenty of scoring "back in the day". Even the present day NHL games are averaging 5-6 goals per game. With the sliders I had before, I saw a lot of 2-1, 2-0, 1-0 games, and even though the gameplay was good, the goalies were just too strong for my liking. So I dropped the reaction time and increased shooting accuracy.

With this set, you better be playing good defense because if a goal scorer gets an opening inside the home plate scoring area, most times that puck is going in (either CPU or Human). In my opinion, that's the way it should be. I've got plenty of room to grow with these sliders with respect to making the game harder as my offensive abilities continue to improve. Pro is way to easy, so I think I'm getting close to my sweet spot on all-star.

Re: Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

Still fiddling with these but I think I almost nailed them. I'm replaying the 1973-74 Stanley Cup Finals. I'll post some pics soon.

Re: Bostongahden's All-Star Sliders

OK got some pics of classic hockey action.
Game 1 - Gilles Gilbert was brilliant and stole this one as Boston potted 2 empty netters.

Espo wiring one at Parent.

Game 2 - Gilbert was marvelous again as Philadelphia scored in the third to break his shutout streak.

Cashman's goal on a turnover.

and the celly...

Bobby Orr rifles one past Parent on a perfect screen by Gregg Sheppard.

Bobby Clarke cuts the lead in half with a shorty.

Having a blast with this game. Creating teams is a time-consuming process but I almost have 12 completed. Sharing needs to return to this game. Quite a few changes on my sliders (in red on first post) as I overhauled the passing and the game plays much looser and natural. Very happy with what I've been seeing so far.
