Oh do I ever know. Sometimes after a few too many games in a row my focus drifts and I just fall into bad habits. This is from someone who has played the game extensively for 20+ years. I'll simply stop assessing what's going on around me and start skating and forcing plays.
For any new users, get into the practice mode and set up some rush scenarios where you have a numbers advantage and learn to make plays and passes out of the glide.
You'll even benefit from slowing up at times and making the AI defender slow up, and then you can simply explode by him into space.
