So does this mean the player will fit in that range in their Prime, or the Highest they will ever be, or in the near future?
And if it is a medium Top 9, could the player get to be in the upper 80s sometimes?
Any more info would be appreciated.

Re: Can Someone Explain to Me What Potential Means?

I get that it’s the scouts probability of what the player is. My question is more do you all tend to take a guy that is a “low” elite or somebody that’s medium, high, or exact top 6/top 4. I get the low elite could become better, but what have you all had more success drafting? Also asking about a player that this is what it displays during the draft. Thanks!

Re: Can Someone Explain to Me What Potential Means?

Just using logic here, but to me, "elite" and "franchise" covers first line. Therefore top 6 f and top 4 d would be 2nd line, and top 9f and top 6d would be 3rd line. In other words if a guy's potential says top 6 forward it doesn't mean anywhere in the top 6, he's not going to be a #1 guy. His max potential is to crack the bottom end of the top 6, most likely a 2nd line guy.

I THINK low, med, high tag is the probability that player will reach his potential.

Edit- It seems the low, med, high, exact tag is your scouts accuracy on the player.
That's the old system, the new one (from EA NHLs own website) is:

FORWARDS:
First Line Forward = 85 OVR - 99 OVR
Second Line Forward = 82 OVR - 85 OVR
Third Line Scoring Forward = 80 OVR - 82 OVR
Third Line Checking Forward = 78 OVR - 80 OVR
Fourth Line Forward = 75 OVR - 78 OVR

DEFENSEMEN:
Top 2 Defenseman = 87 OVR - 99 OVR
Top 4 Defenseman = 81 OVR - 87 OVR
Top 6 Defenseman = 78 OVR - 81 OVR
Top 8 Defenseman = 75 OVR - 78 OVR

GOALTENDERS:
Elite Goaltender = 87 OVR - 99 OVR
Starting Goaltender = 82 OVR - 87 OVR
Backup Goaltender = 75 OVR - 82 OVR

Its actually not the old system what hes talking about is potential and what your talking about is a players current role. Both show on the players card....

Re: Can Someone Explain to Me What Potential Means?

Ring the bell, schools in session.

This is potential, this is where a players OVERALL stat is expected to peak based on the scouting report. Exact, High, Medium, and Low are the scouts accuracy.

Franchise: 94-98
Elite: 87-93
Top 6 Forward: 83-87
Top 9 Forward: 80-82
Bottom 6 Forward: 78-81
Top 4 D: 84-87
Top 6 D:81-83
7th D: 78-80
Starter: 84-88
Fringe Starter: 82-84
Backup: 79-82

*This is player role, this is where you should put them based on their current overall.

FORWARDS:
First Line Forward = 85 OVR - 99 OVR
Second Line Forward = 82 OVR - 85 OVR
Third Line Scoring Forward = 80 OVR - 82 OVR
Third Line Checking Forward = 78 OVR - 80 OVR
Fourth Line Forward = 75 OVR - 78 OVR

DEFENSEMEN:
Top 2 Defenseman = 87 OVR - 99 OVR
Top 4 Defenseman = 81 OVR - 87 OVR
Top 6 Defenseman = 78 OVR - 81 OVR
7th Defenseman = 75 OVR - 78 OVR

GOALTENDERS:
Elite Goaltender = 87 OVR - 99 OVR
Starting Goaltender = 82 OVR - 87 OVR
Backup Goaltender = 75 OVR - 82 OVR

This means for example a forward with an overall 78 and a potential of Top 6 Forward Exact could eventually become good enough to move from the third line (78) to the first or second line as he reaches his potential. There are also minor leauge potentials and roles for skaters who have even lower overall stats and don't improve enough to move up to the NHL.

Oh and to clarify players reach their potential faster if you put them in their appropriate roles. For example a third line forward may be overwhelmed playing on a first or second line or not be challenged playing on a fourth line.

Good info

If I may add, exact means that the player has already reached his potential/will oot grow anymore (natural growth). I believe 25 is the age. High/Low are also not the scout's accuracy per se. Scout accuracy is represented by the horizontal bars. Rather, high and low are more like how likely a player is to reach that level.

I also compared the role scale that EA posted with what is actually reflected in game as I did work on the TrueSim rosters. I found these roles and OVR scales to be more accurate/reliable:

Forwards
Elite (90+)
1st Line (88-90)
Top 6 (84-87)
Top 9 (81-83)
Bottom 6 (79-81)
Depth (76-78)

D-Men
Elite (90+)
Top 2 (87-90)
Top 4 (81-86)
Top 6 (78-80)
7th (75-77)

Goalies
Elite (90+)
Starter (81-89)
NHL Backup (77-80)
AHL Starter (73-76)
