DING-DING! Drive-By Truckers. Best working American hard rock band today.

Going back into the time tunnel, it was pretty hard to argue with the multi-ax attack of The Outlaws or .38 Special. The Smithereens also built a formidable wall of sound with multiple guitars.

Take care,
PK

Re: Dueling guitarists

Sorry guys. The ultimate in duel guitarists is K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest. They are mezmerizing.

I'm not overly familiar with either band outside of a handful of songs by each, but would Megadeth and Dragonforce fit into this discussion? Different style than what's been brought up so far, but both feature dueling guitarists so far as I know.

Metal's competitive nature has resulted in a lot of the genre (and its numerous subgenres) being packed with excellent guitarists. Alex Skolnick, Devin Townsend, Alexi Laiho, Jason Becker, Jeff Loomis, Ben Weinman, etc., etc.

A combo of Mustaine/Poland, Mustaine/Friedman, even Mustaine/Pitrelli, etc. should definitely be up there. Rust in Peace is the last mainstream metal classic to feature brilliant solo trade-offs, IMO.

Herman Li and Sam Toteman from Dragonforce are excellent players, but they haven't delivered a classic album yet IMO. Of the "newer" duos, I'd say Matthew Bachand and Jonathan Donais from Shadows Fall deserve a nod. Their work on just Of One Blood and The Art of Balance puts them up there.

Some bands have lead/rhythm guitar tandems or twin-leads, but have great records based less on their performance and more on the songwriting. Mastodon, Anthrax, and Lamb of God immediately come to mind.

Hetfield/Hammett is a classic duo.

And of course, gotta represent my namesake:

Not always in key or utilizing sound theory, but always kick-***. Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King, Slayer.

Re: Dueling guitarists

By the subject titled "dueling guitarists", it seems to imply that both guitarists share lead responsibilities. That would probably rule out Izzy Stradlin/Slash, and AC/DC's Young brothers. Like the original post, KK Downing/Glenn Tipton and Dave Murray/Adrian Smith are the best that comes to mind, especially Murray/Smith. Almost every one of Iron Maiden's songs feature them doing some nice harmonies.

What was the setup for the Scorpions? Did Rudolf Schenker and Michael Schenker shared leads, or was it Michael did all the leads?
