Cord cutting

I thought there was a thread, but searching said no... If so, lock it up and point me in the right direction.

I took a step today to cutting the cord Ė

I canít quite cut the cord, as I am in a contract with DISH and I donít want to pay the $200.00 up-front to get out. So I dropped to their lowest package, $19.99, which comes to $40 after $10 credit. Still too much, but better than the $87.00 I was paying. It gives me 40 channels. CBS, NBC, FOX, Food network and some other crappy channels. So with football season coming up, I can still watch NFL games on HD on my TV. If itís a MNF game I want to watch, Iíll figure something out.

We have Netflix and Hulu, so I am going to get a Roku player for my daughters room and maybe get one for my bedroom. I donít think I need one for the living room, as I can just use PS4 to watch Hulu and Netflix is built into the DISH box. My son mostly watches shows on NetFlix and Hulu, so I am set there.

I thought about paying the charge to break my contract with DISH, and I still may, but seeing you can only use one subscription to things like Sling TV at a time, kind of made me change my plans.

Future plan is probably have ROKU in our bedroom, my daughters room and the living room. Get Sling for them and call it a day. Although PS VUE is temping.

Any tips you guys can give or suggest to make this cord cutting experience better?

Re: Cord cutting

Splurge on the fastest internet you can, and go with Vue and get a HD antenna for your local channels if Vue doesn't have them. You can run Vue on up to 5 devices at the same time, so that solves the major issue with Sling.

Vue is adding NFL Network and RedZone for the Fall.

Re: Cord cutting

Sling doesn't have a dvr plus it falters during big events.

Re: Cord cutting

You can install a outdoor HD Antenna and hook that into your cable to get locals....

I was all for Sling but heard about the issues and was able to get my cable/internet bill down to a level that was decent....

May revisit in the future as companies offer more streaming though...

Re: Cord cutting

Depends on what you are looking for. Amazon Fire Stick is $40. They all offer the same damn channels and apps. Why pay close to $80 for Roku or over $100 for Apple TV or Nvidia Shield. Shield is cool if you looking to play your PC games on a big screen if the PC is in a different room.

For my office, Amazon Fire Stick does just fine since my gaming PC is in the same room. If I wanted to hook it up to the large flat screen, I could just buy a 15 foot HDMI cord for $8.

really good comparison article.

you really can't go wrong with a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Nvidia Shield, Apple TV or Google Chromecast. Just comes down to what you want to spend and what features interest you more.
