You need an action replay to save your roster file to your PC. From there you can use the editor. Here is a walkthrough posted on the main roster editor page (I just copied from the site - sub NHL for NFL and franchise for roster):

Requirements:

NTSC Xbox
NTSC NHL 2k5
Action Replay for Xbox.
Windows PC (or MAC with Virtual PC but don't quote me on that).

Install the Action Replay Software on your PC.
Download the editor and install it on your PC.

Here is a run through for editing a franchise file:

Fire up NHL 2k5 on Xbox.
Load franchise.
Insert the AR memory card into controller.
Save franchise to the AR card.
Place the card in the AR USB dongle connected to PC.
Run the AR program.
Drag the NHL game save from the Memory card pane to the PC database pane.
Drag the NHL game save from the PC database pane to my desktop.
Run the NHL PC Editor.
Hit the open button and select the game save zip on my desktop. The game save will open.
Edit and Save the file.
Drag the game save zip from my desktop to the AR memory card pane, overwriting the existing file.
Stick the AR memory card back into my controller.
Load franchise in NHL 2k5 from the memory card.

OK, so first, I have to download the rosters from xbox memory to my action replay memory and then to flying finn editor? Is that right? (btw, I'm trying to edit espn 2k5)

To edit the rosters, you have to copy the roster file to your Action Replay. From there you copy that file to your PC and open the roster file using the editor. Make changes, resave to action replay and then resave onto your XBox.

I have a PS2 but my brother has an XBox with an Action Replay. That's all the advice I can give.

Maybe someone needs to tell this person about the separate memory card save / load screen…? That’s what had me stumped for a couple of days.

When in the game and you go to save a roster, it brings you to the screen with all the various roster, settings, etc. saves. You cannot save your roster onto your memory card from this screen. You have to SQUEEZE the L or R trigger once, and it flips you to the separate memory card save / load screen. Now you may save. And now you may remove the memory card from your controller, insert it in the Action Replay devise hooked up to your PC, and then move the saved file over from the card to the PC.
