Just don't even try, the AI does it much better than you can... Try to manually control a D-Line Man or a blitzing player. Switch to a guy defending the pass only when the ball is thrown near him to try for a pick or a tip.

Then try and let the computer handle it. They do a pretty good job most of the time.

Defending is VERY possible as a user controlled player. Use the CB and if you are in position use the INTERCEPT button, otherwise use the SWAT button. NEVER use the inbetween Y button its stupid PERIOD You must practice A LOT and covering over the middle is tough in the game and real life. Another way is to try and hit them as they catch it. I would say letting the computer do it is the riskiest.

The best way is to do a quick game and whoever is on defense go to that team and choose CB, S, or LB. Then when they are on offense switch to the other team and pick the same defensive position. This is the best way to find out what works, remember it is about timing and reflexes. I almost always use the intercept button because that is what I want/expect but it does cost me sometimes so I would try to use the swat on longer/single coverage passes.
