Used NFL 2K5 doesn't work (PS2)

I got a used NFL 2K5 for PS2. When I bought it, I checked the disc and asked for the salesman to look at it and it seemed ok. The disc looks just fine. But when I got home and put it in my mod-chipped PS2 (that never failed to read a disc before), I got a message on a black screen saying that the disc cannot be read. I never got this message and my PS2 works fine (I checked with other games - original and not original, PAL and NTSC - and it's all good).
Any ideas?
And no, I can't return the disc or replace it because...well, it's a dozen thousands KMs away from my home...lol

Kind of a lesson for you. Never look at a disc and think it looks fine. There are many ways for it to be screwed without you being able to see it. Unless you have eyes that can microscopically zoom into the fine details of the DVD, your best bet is to buy a game from a store you can return it to, or have them test it for you before you leave with it.

There isn't likely much you can do but learn from it, toss the disc away and go buy another one.

Well, I bought it at EB Games, so it's a well-known store. I couldn't test it there because it was a small branch and only one guy was handling clients there, so it wasn't possible to check it. Anyway, I couldn't find it there newer or something so I got this used one. But at least it was only 5$ so it's not that bad.
Anyway, since the store is in another country (and far far away) I can't return it.

Good news! I got it working! I made a copy of the DVD and it works perfectly!
