Not surprising. Fever is still online too as are most old XBOX games. You can still play a game of 2K4 if you wish...

The only online sports game I know of taken offline is NHL 2K3.... a great game both on and offline with the right sliders and tweaks.

i think nba 2k3 is online still(still able to play online with). No 2k2(xbox) sports were online.

How cool would it be to continue to play this game online with custom rosters?

I wish there was a way that T2/Visual Concepts could change the way the servers picked up the rosters to allow us to play with updated/customized rosters the same way that EA's MVP baseball does.
