Re: Reviving the Boom | A Seattle Seahawks franchise story

Seattle -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Seahawks fanatics. In this blog, I have some tidbits, musings and rumors to discuss. I’ll be doing a weekly report on all things related the Seattle Seahawks. That could be an injury take, trade takes and even mock draft takes as the season progresses. Hope you join the discussion!

• Seahawk fans, you can breathe a sigh of relief. And a big sigh of relief. Even I was sweating it, awaiting the news. Mike Macdonald informed local media this morning Kenneth Walker suffered an ACL sprain early in the third quarter early in the third quarter. He didn’t return and some believed he may have torn his ACL. He’s not expected to miss any time.

Ronnie Harrison wasn’t so fortunate. Early in the first quarter he suffered an abdominal tear and the Seahawks are placing him on injured reserve. The hard-hitting safety has been a pleasant surprise this season. He’s recorded 27 tackles and 3 pass deflections when featured in packages.

Jonathan Hankins, who missed significant time this season has decided to remain away from the team facility for the rest of the season due to personal issues. The Seahawks have placed him on injured reserve. Hankins is 32-years old, is in the final year of his contract and saw rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter get promoted over him and record his first sack of his career. I wonder if this is related?

The team also announced Tre Brown suffered a bruised sternum midway through the fourth quarter. He did not return and was replaced by Andrew Booth Jr.

Rookie Jackson Powers-Johnson also suffered a stringer but returned to the field.

Defensive end Dre’Mont Jones also suffered an undisclosed injury. He didn’t return to the field but won’t miss any additional time. Jones recorded a tackle and half a sack in the victory over the Vikings.

• After spending most of the season on the practice squad, Chau Smith-Wade has been called up to the main roster with Ronnie Harrison being placed on injured reserve.

The Seahawks have also called up defensive tackle Cameron Young from the practice squad, which fills the final spot of the roster made vacant by Jonathan Hankins.

In corresponding moves, the Seahawks signed running back Tyrion Davis-Price and defensive end Jeffrey Gunter to the practice squad.

• After a week of rumors Seattle were interested in Kenny Pickett, Sam Howell went out and arguably had the best game of his Seahawks career. What a way to silence that rumor. Howell has thrown six touchdowns to two interceptions over the last two games, while completing over 70% of his passes.

• Huge props to Devon Witherspoon, who shut down Justin Jefferson. Jefferson didn’t record a catch on Witherspoon and had a challenging day. He was routinely double-teamed and struggled to get open with the limited amount of time Geno Smith faced. Still, Witherspoon has consistently shown this season he’s one the best cornerbacks in the league.

• Here is what I am hearing from sources within the Seattle Seahawks organization. The team are reportedly very high on FS Malaki Starks of Georgia and DE Mykel Williams of Georgia. Both are projected to be first round picks. Julian Love is yet to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks and the club still need help on the defensive line with getting to the quarterback.

• If the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Arizona Cardinals this weekend, they’ll claim the NFC West division for the 12th time and first since 2020. Seattle can still win the division this week if they lose; however that’s contingent on San Francisco also losing. The Seahawks can finish no worse than second in their division this season. The Cardinals are on a two-game losing streak.

• It’s been a good week for Sam Howell. He threw four touchdown passes in their win in Atlanta, putting the Seahawks on the brink of reaching the postseason. In doing so, he set a career high in touchdown passes (22) and was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 16. Seattle may have found their next franchise quarterback and they got him in a trade with the Washington Commanders for peanuts.

• For the second time in three seasons, Kenneth Walker III has reached the 1,000 yards rushing milestone. After spraining his ACL in week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings, he ripped off 96 yards from 15 carries. So much for ACL sprains. He’s one yard away from setting a career high in rushing yards and has already set a career high in carries (232). Despite averaging 4.5 yards per carry, he’s only found the endzone three times this season. In his previous two seasons, he found the endzone 8 times or more.

• Rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker is still making an impact, when he can. He recorded a 25 yard touchdown reception against the Falcons, giving him 6 touchdowns from 14 catches. His six touchdown receptions are second most on the team. He has 244 receiving yards this season and is averaging 17.4 yards per catch.
