TCU Football Bye Week Report – Week 15

As TCU enjoys its bye week heading into Week 15, the college football world remains abuzz with playoff implications, Heisman debates, and recruiting developments. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the Horned Frogs and the national landscape.

Heisman Finalist Shake-Up

The Heisman Trophy race tightened this week with an unexpected change in the finalist list. Boston College’s dynamic QB Thomas Castellanos supplants Oregon’s Dante Moore, joining the elite group of candidates vying for the most prestigious individual award in college football. The updated list includes:

Jacurri Brown (UCF, JR)
Cade Klubnik (Clemson, SR)
Nico Iamaleava (Tennessee, SO)
Avery Johnson (Kansas State, JR)
Thomas Castellanos (Boston College, JR)

Johnson, a dual-threat weapon for Kansas State, will take center stage in Fort Worth next week as his team battles TCU for the Big XII Championship.

TCU Feels the Sting of Disrespect

Despite being the only undefeated team in the top 25, TCU sits at No. 3 in the national rankings. While the Horned Frogs have taken the high road publicly, there’s a growing sentiment of disrespect within the locker room. This frustration could fuel their performance as they prepare for a crucial top-5 clash with Kansas State.

Recruiting Success Continues

On the recruiting trail, TCU remains hot. The Horned Frogs boast the 9th-ranked recruiting class nationally and recently secured the commitment of 3-star offensive guard Eric Cannida. Cannida is a powerful presence on the line and projects as a key asset to TCU’s future. His addition underscores the staff’s focus on building depth and sustainability in the trenches.

Game of the Week: Big XII Championship Showdown

All eyes will be on Amon G. Carter Stadium next week as TCU hosts Kansas State in the Big XII Championship Game. With Heisman finalist Avery Johnson leading the Wildcats, this top-5 matchup has massive implications:

A guaranteed College Football Playoff spot awaits the victor.
TCU seeks to solidify its claim as the best team in the nation, while Kansas State aims to play spoiler and secure its own playoff berth.
The Horned Frogs’ defense, led by its dominant front seven, will be tasked with containing Johnson’s dual-threat capabilities, while TCU’s offense looks to continue its explosive play.

Looking Ahead

For TCU, the mission is clear: silence the doubters, capture the Big XII crown, and march into the College Football Playoff as the only undefeated team in the nation. Next week’s clash will define the season and set the stage for a potential national title run.

Stay tuned for what promises to be an unforgettable finale to the Horned Frogs’ incredible campaign.

Big XII Championship Game Recap: TCU Holds Off Kansas State for 6th Big XII Title

In a hard-fought battle on December 13, 2025, the No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs defended their Big XII Championship title with a 20-14 victory over No. 5 Kansas State at AT&T Stadium. The win marks TCU’s sixth Big XII title and their 12th conference championship overall, propelling them into the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive year.

TCU quarterback Josh Hoover showcased poise and efficiency, delivering a 154.8 passer rating with 329 passing yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Hoover also contributed with his legs, scoring a crucial 5-yard rushing touchdown. Despite facing relentless pressure that resulted in three sacks, Hoover’s composure was instrumental in guiding the Horned Frogs to victory.

The TCU rushing attack struggled against Kansas State’s stout front, as Jeremy Payne managed only 30 yards on seven carries. However, the passing game picked up the slack, led by Braylon James with 120 yards on 12 receptions. DJ Rogers added 71 yards and a touchdown through the air, providing key offensive support.

Defensively, TCU made timely plays, recording two sacks and two critical interceptions, both by senior free safety Bud Clark. These turnovers proved pivotal in halting Kansas State’s drives and maintaining the Horned Frogs' lead.

Kansas State’s Heisman finalist quarterback Avery Johnson had an up-and-down night, throwing for 264 yards and one touchdown but was hampered by the two interceptions. Running back DJ Giddens was held to 58 yards on 12 carries, while wide receiver Quenton Rice led the Wildcats with 80 receiving yards on seven catches.

Kansas State’s defense kept the game close, registering an impressive 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. However, they couldn’t come up with a turnover to tip the scales in their favor.

The victory secures TCU’s spot in the second year of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, with their next game scheduled for January 1, 2026, in a bowl game yet to be determined.
