Re: Boilermaker Football (NCAA 10 PS3)
THE EXPONENT Purdue's Independent Daily Student Newspaper A New Hope For Boiler Nation By Staff Reports Purdue breezed past Toledo today 34-6 to give Danny Hope a victory in his head coaching debut. Purdue started slowly, but got rolling towards the end of the first half. Defensively, the Boilermakers did not allow a touchdown in the game, surrendering just 2 field goals. Purdue quarterback Brent Sykes went 12 for 20, passing for 186 yards, 2 TD's, and 1 INT. The running game had an even tougher time getting started as leading rusher Garrett Kendrick ran for only 61 yards on 15 carries and a TD. Turnovers were plenty with each team committing 3 giveaways. Purdue made the most of their opponents' mistakes, scoring 17 points off turnovers. Coach Hope was pleased with his team's performance saying, "It took a while to get going, but once we did we looked alright. This is to be expected for the first game of the season. We have a brand new group of players, a new head coach, and a new playbook. Of course we're going to go through a period of adjustment." "I was very pleased with how our defense played within the redzone. Any time you can shut a team out inside the redzone it's impressive," added Hope. "Now we just have to try to focus on starting better. If we can get out of the gates next week the way we finished today's game, we'll be in good shape." The win moves Purdue to 1-0 on the season as they head into week 2 with a showdown against 14th-ranked Oregon in Eugene. Re: Boilermaker Football (NCAA 10 PS3)
THE EXPONENT Purdue's Independent Daily Student Newspaper Preview Edition Taming "The Zoo" By Staff Reports The Purdue Boilermakers head into "The Autzen Zoo" on Saturday to face the Oregon Ducks and one of the nation's loudest stadiums in college football. Autzen Stadium, nicknamed the "Autzen Zoo" in Eugene Oregon boasts the #8 spot on the "Toughest Places To Play" list. Awaiting the Boilers will be 58,000 rowdy fans and the 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks. The Ducks, 0-1, lost there first game of the season to #10 Boise State last Saturday 38-41. "They're going to be ready to play Saturday night," said head coach Danny Hope. "Anytime you have to play a team that is coming off a loss, it's a dangerous affair. They're going to want revenge for what Boise State did to them last week. We're going to have to play our best game of football to have a chance against them," added Hope. Oregon is led by senior halfback Jeff Watson who rushed for 129 yards in the loss to Boise State. What may prove even tougher for Purdue than stopping Watson is trying to score on Oregon's highly rated defense. "Although they gave up 41 points last week, they're gonna be tough to move the ball against," said Hope. "We know their performance last week was not typical of this team. We have our work cut out for us if we're gonna score points on them." So what do the experts say about this game? Well, the cast of ESPN's College Football Gameday was divided. Coach Lee Corso is picking the favored Ducks. Former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit is going with the underdog Boilermakers. One thing we know for sure, it's going to be an electric atmosphere. It's the home-opener for Oregon so the Duck-faithful are going to be out in full force and louder than usual. The game will be televised regionally on the ABC network or can be heard locally in the Indiana area on Newstalk 1280AM radio. Joe McConnell's pregame show begins at 3pm CT. Kickoff is 4pm CT. Re: Boilermaker Football (NCAA 10 PS3)
THE EXPONENT Purdue's Independent Daily Student Newspaper Purdue Survives Ducks' Rally; Wallace Intercepts Game-Tying Pass In Endzone By Staff Reports The Oregon Ducks rallied in the fourth quarter to erase a large lead but a late turnover ended their comeback bid and sealed the win for Purdue, 28-21. Purdue CB Brandon Wallace intercepted Oregon's Seth Cox in the endzone to break up the would be game-tying drive. After falling behind 7-0 to open the game, Purdue responded by scoring 28 unanswered points, taking a 28-7 lead into halftime. Oregon narrowed the gap by scoring 14 points in the second half to bring the game to 28-21. With only 2 minutes left in the game, Oregon took possession, mounting a comeback drive that fell just short. Wallace's game saving interception brings his total to 3 on the year. He picked off 2 passes last week versus Toledo, returning one for a touchdown. Purdue answered Oregon's opening score by returning the ensuing kickoff for a score of their own. Aaron Stanley returned the kick 98 yards for the touchdown. CB, Patrick Covington added to the Boilers points by returning an interception for a touchdown on the following drive. Purdue's offense got rolling in the second quarter with QB Brent Sykes capping off back-to-back drives with touchdown passes. WR Jaymond Robinson and TE Brad Wright caught touchdown passes of 16 and 10 yards respectively to send the game to halftime with Purdue leading 28-7. Oregon did not roll over in the second half. A touchdown a piece in the third and fourth quarters set the Ducks up for a great comeback victory only to have it halted by Wallace's pick. "It was a great win for us, but it sure was a nail-biter," said head coach Danny Hope. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, so it wasn't a shock to us that it came down to the wire like that. In the end, our guys just made more big plays when it counted," added Hope. The Boilermakers improved their record to 2-0 on the season. The loss sees the Ducks record fall to 0-2. Re: Boilermaker Football (NCAA 10 PS3)
The Purdue Sports Network presents: The Joe McConnell Show "Hello Boiler Nation and welcome to the Joe McConnell show! What a stunning upset it was Saturday night knocking off Oregon in their own house. The team looked great and should have no problem this week against Northern Illinois. We have a special guest lined up for today's show: starting quarterback Brent Sykes, but first we're going to hear from sideline reporter Rob Blackman on the Boilermaker injury report. Rob...." "Thanks Joe. Well, after just 2 games the Boilers are looking good on all fronts. Only one player is listed as unplayable for the Northern Illinois game. Junior cornerback Elliot Weber has a strained back, suffered in the Oregon game, and is said to be out for 3 weeks. Senior wide receiver Willie Jones, who was knicked up in the season opener against Toledo, is listed as fit to go on Saturday. This will be a huge boost for the receiving corps and quarterback Brent Sykes who saw a huge drop off in production last week. We'll keep you posted with up-to-date injury news as the season progresses. Back to you Joe...." "Thanks for that injury report Rob. Now we have quarterback Brent Sykes in studio with us." Joe: "Brent, how are you doing today?" Brent: "I'm doing fine Joe. Glad to be here." Joe: "Brent tell us about the big win over Oregon on Saturday night." Brent: "Well, it was a great win for our team. I think a lot of people were thinking we were gonna get killed so it was a chance to show them all what we're capable of." Joe: "You're winning games but the offense really hasn't taken off yet. Do you expect things to pick up offensively as the season goes on?" Brent: "Yeah, I think we're all just trying to get on the same page right now. With a new coach and a new playbook, it can take a few games to get going. I'm hoping we start to see some improvement over the next few games." Joe: "Brent tells us a little bit about coach Hope. What's he like to play for?" Brent: "The cool thing about coach Hope is that he let's you alone as long as you're doing your job. Coach Tiller was a little bit different in that regard. I like being able to play my game without having someone talking in my ear about every little thing." Joe: "Well Brent, we thank you for chatting with us today and we wish you the best of luck on Saturday against Northern Illinois." Brent: "Thanks Joe, it was my pleasure." Joe: "Well, that's all the time we have for today on the Joe McConnell Show. Join us next time right here on the Purdue Sports Network!"
