Re: Four for the Price of One: A Madden 10 4-Team Dynasty
GREEN BAY SENDS PHILLY PACKIN, ADVANCES TO SUPERBOWL
The 12-4 Eagles, coming off a dominant home win of the Seattle Seahawks, traveled to historic Lambeau Field with a chance to play in Superbowl 44 on the line, and also marking QB Donovan McNabb's first ever postseason appearance at Lambeau.
With Green Bay winning the toss and opting to receive they were able to move the chains on a big 3rd down conversion for a 34 yd gain to WR Gregg Jennings on a 3rd and 11. Green Bay would get the ball into the Eagle’s redzone, but Philly made a stand on the 7 yd line and GB had to settle for the short FG.
The Eagles would go 3 and out on their next two possessions, w/ Green Bay storming downfield only to come up short on two more field goals to push their lead to 9-0 through the first qtr.
Philly would get the ball to start the 2nd qtr, and finally get a drive going…only to see it end on an AJ Hawk interception.
McNabb would throw one more INT in the qtr, and Green Bay would jump out to a 16-0 lead until a last minute Philadelphia drive netted them a 39 yd FG with 3 seconds left in the 1st half.
To begin the 3rd Qtr the Eagles methodically drove downfield into the Green Bay redzone. A 2nd and Goal, 6 yd bootleg pass, to TE Brent Celek nearly netted the Eagles their first TD, but Celek was stopped inches short by DPOY, SS Atari Bigby (w/ ILB Nick Barnett assisting on the tackle). With 3rd and inches for a score Philly handed off to Brian Westbrook who was stuffed up the middle. Having come downfield and found them selves on the Green Bay 1, it was now 4th down with the Eagles trailing 16-3, on a drive that had lasted more than 6 minutes...
McNabb broke huddle, trotted his offense out, and handed off to Brian Westbrook on a counter-run play. Westbrook was snuffed in the backfield, and the Green Bay Packers had staved off a dominating Philadelphia drive, now with the ball, 13 pt lead still in tact.…and it wouldn’t take long for Green Bay to score.
I See your drive and raise you...
After moving the ball to the 19 on two pass plays Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers connected w/ WR Jordy Nelson on an 81 yd TD pass; Green Bay leading 23-3.
With Philly getting the ball after GB’s 2nd TD they were finally able to get on the board with their first TD. A pass from McNabb to WR Reggie Brown -- his first and only catch of the postseason; Green Bay leading 23-10.
This score didn’t take much time off the clock, and Philadelphia found them selves down by two scores with about 5:00 left in the 3rd Qtr and still the entire 4th to go.
Let's get this one over with?
After allowing Ryan Grant to run on them in the 1st half, Philadelphia did not surrender a first down rushing in any of Green Bay’s attempts through the 3rd Qtr and most of the 4th.
Doing so allowed Philly to squeak back into the game, as they soon were able to take control having the ball and being only down by a score, 23-17; after being down by as many as 16 in this classic contest.
A wasted opportunity...
Green Bay’s first play from scrimmage would be the back breaker to the Eagles Superbowl aspirations as Aaron Rodgers connected w/ James Jones on a 67yd bomb that put GB back up by two scores w/ 5:00 minutes remaining; GB 31-17. Philly was playing for the run in a Nickel-Strong, and Jones took advantage of the outside w/ no Safety help over the middle.
Vintage McNabb...
Philadelphia would score quickly after McNabb showed some of his vintage skills gashing the Green Bay defense down the sideline for a 40 yd gain to setup a Michael Vick 10yd TD scamper.
However, GB answered back after a broken down pass play resulted in a 39yd Ryan Grant TD reception.
Aaron Rodgers was hit as he threw, but got the ball away in time for Ryan Grant to catch the lame duck pass which floated through the air. A missed tackle by Asante Samuel cleared the right side for Grant to score; they’d go for two and be up GB 39-24.
There was still some time left for Philadelphia, and with still two timeouts left, a quick score or kick return for a TD could breathe life into Philly. DeSean Jackson, who was averaging about 35 yds a kick return got Philly out to about midfield, and almost broke the return for a TD. Now, with only 3:00 minutes remaining, McNabb utilized one of his best weapons rookie WR Jeremy Maclin.
They connected over the middle for a BIG gain, stopped only by none other than...DPOY SS Atari Bigby, but in a blink of an eye Philadelphia was beating on Green Bay’s door.
The next play, 15 yards from a score, resulted in McNabb looking like the McNabb of old, gashing Green Bay for a 15 yd TD run to draw within one score; GB 39-31.
In one last attempt to stop Green Bay, get the ball back, and tie the game. Philadelphia’s defense answered…stopping Green Bay on three straight running plays. Albeit, using every remaining timeout, and the 2 minute warning to get the ball back with 1:27 left.
Starting from their own 42 yd line, McNabb’s first play from scrimmage was a check-down to the flats getting it out to Westbrook for a 7 yd gain. However, Westbrook was unable to get out of bounds, and the clock was running…McNabb called for the no huddle, quickly audibled to a pass play, and the ball was hiked…
A Bitter end...
…Only Aaron Kampman’s motor was running. He knifed through the line, got to McNabb, dealing a heavy blow, and the ball was loose. AJ Hawk was there to scoop it up, and took it to the house for 6. Green Bay would tack on the 2pt conversion going up 47-31, and that would be your final score as the Eagles kneeled on the ball from there killing the 1:00 left of time and the 2009 Packers were headed to the Superbowl to face off with Tom Brady’s Patriots.
