~Week 4 Preview~

San Diego (2-1) @ Pittsburgh (3-0), 8:20pm, Heinz Field
Weather: 63 degrees and clear

Lets take a look at the Chargers Week 4 matchup @ Pittsburgh:

Team Stats
.........................OFFENSE...........|...... ........DEFENSE...........
.........................SD | PIT............|..............SD | PIT...........
Total Yds..976 (19th) | 1043 (11)...|......1218 (31)| 788 (3)....

PPG.............24.0 (7) | 25.6 (4)....|........21.7 (17)| 11.0 (T1)..

San Diego heads to Pittsburgh on Sunday night for a match-up against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game will give the Chargers a chance to see where they rank compared to the top team in the league with the Steelers undefeated so far this season. The Steelers defense has been playing well so far this season, only allowing a league-tying 33 points through 3 games as well as the third least yards on defense. The Chargers did put in a much better deffensive effort last week against the Dolphins holding their runners to under 100 yards after giving up over 200 a game in the first 2. But the Chargers will need both run and pass defense firing come Sunday night if they want to win this one.

Injury Report:
PITTSBURGH - LT M. Starks - Broken thumb (1 Week)
SAN DIEGO - LE R. Bingham - Torn tricep (SEASON)

Keys to San Diego winning:

1] Run early and often. The Steelers have the 3rd best pass defense in the league entering this game and only the 17th best run defense. San Diego are going to have to exploit this and run early to force Pittsburgh to put 8 men in the box and allow Philip Rivers to do his thing through the air.

2] Put the defense together. Last week the Chargers run defense was good. The pass defense was average. Pittsburgh have the 4th best rushing attack in the league (but haven't scored a TD on the ground yet) and a passing game that has 7 TDs already. San Diego must win the battle in the trenches and stop Willie Parker and also put pressure on Big Ben and lockdown on TE Heath Miller who leads the team with 20 catches for 205 yards and 4 TDs. Staring LT Max Starks being out can only help.

3] Stop Stefan Logan on kick returns. The electrifying returner has taken a kick back for a TD already this season and is averaging a league high 35.7 yards/return. The special teams must limit his return ability and not allow Ben Roethlisberger good field position to start with.

Prediction: Steelers 30, Chargers 21

Re: Now or Never: San Diego Chargers

Steelers defense too much for Chargers.

PITTSBURGH, PA - It was an still night in Pittsburgh with no wind about but there was a buzz in the air. That buzz was the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Both teams knew the Steelers defense would have a big impact on the outcome of this game and unfortunatley for San Diego, that impact favoured Pittsburgh as they came away with a 28-10 win. The Chargers got the first little win by winning the toss and electing to kick. However neither offense could get going with both defenses dominating early until Steelers FB Carey Davis made a catch followed by a spectacular dive into the end zone for an 8 yard TD with 46 seconds remaining giving the Steelers a 7-0 lead. The second quarter saw much of the same, with defenses getting on top forcing lots of 3 and outs. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger eventually had another breakthrough finding Santonio Holmes for his second TD pass for the night. Holmes made a great catch in heavy traffic to put the Steelers up by 14 with just over 6 minutes before halftime. San Diego eventually got on the board with RB Darren Sproles running for a 14 yard TD on a sweep play, closing the gap to 14-7 with just over 2 minutes to go. The score would remaining like this heading into the break.

Another very defensive quarter saw the only score come with just 10 seconds remaining as Rashard Mendenhall rumbled over for a 14 yard TD putting Pittsburgh up 21-7 going into the last. In the final quarter, Chargers K Nate Kaeding got San Diego a bit closer nailing a 39 yard FG with under 10 minutes to go. But that's as close as they got. RB Willie Parker sealed the game with a 6 yard scamper through a mess of players, making it 28-10 PIT.

In a post-game interview, Charger QB Philip Rivers took an apparent swipe at his team's defense, saying that the defense is dragging this team down and they need to lift their game and support the offense. "We need to be on the field more than the other teams offense and right now, our guys aren't making that happen. If we aren't out there, we can't score. If we don't score, we don't win. Simple".
