Bucs Make One Too Many Mistakes, Fall To Redskins
Week 4
The Redskins beat the Bucs 28-21 at Fed Ex Field today in one of the closest games of the season. Again, the Skins started off slow, but in the end, were able to pull off the victory, with a little help from young Bucs quarterback Josh Johnson.
Bucs QB Josh Freeman was out for the week, so that brought in second stringer Josh Johnson. Who torched the Redskins defense on the first drive, although he had significant help from his running back, Carnell Williams.
The Redskins were able to get to the 50 on their next drive, but then had to punt.
The Bucs then drove down the field, this time with Derrick Ward and Carnell Williams at runningback, getting another 6 points.
The skins, with under 2 minutes to go in the half, had to come up with something. Luckily, Zorn stopped playing so conservatively and let Leinart throw the ball a little. Leinart completed a 30 yard pass to Cooley over the middle. A handoff to Stewart got the skins 10 yards, and then Leinart connected on a 25 yard pass to Cooley for the touchdown. 14-7, Bucs.
The Bucs got the ball back with 45 seconds left, but trying to run the clock, were only able to move 5 yards before punting with 24 seconds to go. (The Redskins used all of their timeouts to get the ball back with some time).
The punt gave the Skins the ball at their own 40. "Our idea was just to get into field goal range" said Zorn after the game. However, on two plays we were unable to do that. So on third down, with 4 seconds to go, we tried a Slants play to see if we could get a real quick pass about 10 yards and then call a time out to get the field goal...yes all in 4 seconds, haha."
"But what happened was completely unexpected, Antwaan [Randle El] had his man beat, so I threw him the ball, and there was no one in front of him. He used his lightning fast speed to run 40 yards for the touchdown!" said Leinart, who threw for his 25 career touchdown today.
"Yea, we went from impossible field goal try to a quick touchdown at the end of the half," said Zorn, chuckling a little.
The momentum had completely swung to the Skins. And the word from the Bucs medical staff was Carnell was out for the rest of the game with a lower back strain. However Derrick Ward, on the Bucs second touchdown drive, had shown himself to be quite capable of filling Cadillac's shoes.
The Bucs first drive after the half was anything but spectacular, running the ball too often for almost no gain.
However, the Redskins went three and out on their drive, and it was back to the Bucs.
The Bucs were able to get down into the red zone, and eventually scored on a Derrick Ward 10 yard rush. 21-14, Bucs at the start of the 4th quarter.
The Redskins then went on a 4 minute and 50 second drive, mostly running the ball, but completing one 25 yard pass to Moss who broke free and ran it into the end zone to tie the game with 2 minutes left in the game.
And then the Josh Johnson showed his youth. On the first pass for the Bucs, he threw a tight pass to Kellen Winslow, but Brian Orakpo was able to step in front and pick the ball off, which gave the Skins the ball at the Bucs 30.
Luckily for the Bucs, they had all three of their time outs. At third and 8 from the 10 with 55 seconds to go, the Redskins were likely going to have to settle for a field goal, leaving a little too much time on the clock for the Bucs. However, Jonathan "you can't tackle me" Stewart was able to get 6 yards untouched and then pushed 3 or 4 guys into the end zone with him!
28-21, 45 seconds to go, no timeouts for the Bucs.
Josh Johnson made a few nice passes, but was unable to get past his own 30, and the drive ended with a Fred Smoot interception.
Leinart: 8/13 160 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT. 5 rushes for 10 yards.
Stewart: 22 attempts for 101 yards, for a 4.5 yards per carry average. 1 TD.

Randle El: 2 rec. 65 yards, 1 TD
