Conqs lose road battle to Air Force Prep Huskies

By Mark Brown
Dodge City Daily Globe
Posted Oct 12, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO —
It's hard to say that an 0-7 team took a step forward in a road loss, but the Dodge City Community College Conquistador football team may have come as close to that dubious feat as any team can in its 48-14 loss Saturday to the Air Force Prep Huskies at Memorial Stadium.
The loss dropped the Conqs to a 0-7 record (0-6 in the Jayhawk Conference), while Air Force Prep improved to 4-4 overall.
After giving up two field goals to the Huskies early on, AFP scored on a 79 yard pass from quarterback TJ Reed to Jason Edmonds.
Joe Bozeman started the game because starting quarterback David Howard had suffered a concussion in last week's game at Hutchinson CC. Coach Khelton Copeland said that Bozeman was prepared for the starting role, as he had taken all the snaps at quarterback in practice in the week's preparation for the homecoming game.
"He was prepared," Copeland said. "He's been taking snaps at quarterback since the spring, knowing that we may need to use him as a receiver/quarterback combination guy."
"We started a bunch of new guys on the offensive line," Copeland said. "They battled, and if you've got guys that will battle for you, that's a start. The kids continued to play hard the whole 60 minutes."
For all the offensive struggles, the Conq defense was able to keep the Huskies from scoring in the final two quarters.
"Defensively, the kids played hard," Copeland said. "There were just some breakdowns in some key situations, and I know no one goes out and intentionally makes mistakes. It just all boils down to the players trusting what we teach them is the right thing to do."
He added that the team would use this week in practice to relearn some of the technical things that have caused the Conqs to implode on the field before the team's match-up with the NJCAA Division 1 9th-ranked Highland Scotties (5-3, 3-0 Jayhawk Conference).
Copeland said that he had not yet seen any film on Highland but did know that the Scotties' strength is the team's defensive unit. That game will be played at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Hays ground attack too much for Demons

The Hays High School football team used a potent running attack to record more than 230 yards rushing in a 21-0 victory over Dodge City on Friday night.

Lady Conq’s lose, men win

DODGE CITY —
The Dodge City Community College women's soccer team scored two late goals, but it wasn't enough to counter earlier miscues as Coffeyville downed the Lady Conquistadors 4-2 Thursday at the St. Mary Sports Complex gymnasium.
The Lady Conqs have won their last 12 matches.

Woe and nine: DCCC goes winless for second time in four years

By Mark Brown
Dodge City Daily Globe

DODGE CITY —
Butler CC thumped Dodge City Community College 27-8 at Memorial Stadium Saturday to close out the Conquistadors' second winless season in 4 years.
Dodge City head coach Kelton Copeland, however, said the final score could have been worse.
"They could have scored 50 points on us if they wanted to," Copeland said.
The Conqs (0-9) were outgained 391 yards to 259.
Butler (5-4) earned 19 first downs. Dodge City mustered only twelve.
The Conqs also converted on only five of thirteen third-down attempts.
Butler quarterback Louis Booth took a knee on the Conqs' 1-yard line to run out the clock in the fourth quarter to prevent the Grizzlies from scoring anymore points.
"There's not a whole lot to say," Copeland said. "Our kids went through the motions. We've got to do a better job recruiting. For the first time all year, I'm disappointed in our effort."
Dodge City was the only team in the eight-member Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference that did not score at least 100 points this season.
Opponents outscored the Conqs by an average margin of 54-9 per game.
Dodge City was outscored in total points 396 to 92.

Honorable Mention KJCAA-Wide Receiver

Well guys we finished the season going 0-9. I was really disappointed with not winning a game this year, but I was really proud of the fact that my performance this year got me honorable mention all-conference. I led the team in receptions and yards this year I would have never guessed in a million years I would have gotten 54 receptions this year. To put things in perspective, I almost didn't even get to start this year. Every day of hard work has paid off so far, and coach Copeland sent out my tape to a few division II schools who were interested including Abilene Christian, Missouri Southern, Southern Arkansas and Western Oregon. Abilene Christian probably is showing the most interest at this time, they actually sent one of there coaches to come talk to me, but I really wanna give Division I a shot so I've decided to stay at Dodge City and play one more year for the Conquistadors. Hopefully things work out for the best.

Conqs rewarded with all-conference honors

DODGE CITY —
Four Dodge City Community College football players have been named 2013 all-conference selections by the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
Freshman tackle Nate Meyers was tabbed a second-team selection as offensive tackle. Meyers, a native of San Marcos, TX., started every game this season.
“Nate's a tremendous young man with a lot of ability and a lot of talent,” Dodge City head coach Kelton Copeland said.
Three other Conquistadors — linebacker Jermaine Jones, cornerback Brian Jolly and wide receiver James Carnes — were given honorable mention by the conference.
Jones, a sophomore, led the team in tackles with 102. Jones hails from Winter Park, Fla.
“Football is important to Jermaine. Winning is important,” Copeland said. “He cares. He will be a big-time factor for a four year school next year.”
Jolly, a freshman from Norfolk, Va., registered 31 tackles and two interceptions.
Copeland said Jolly excelled both on the field and in the classroom.
“That’s going to open a lot of doors for Brian,” Copeland said.
Carnes, a sophomore, led the Conqs with 54 catches and 879 yards. The Coloraod Springs, CO., native also scored four touchdowns.
“James did a tremendous amount for us,” Copeland said. “He’s a tremendous football player.”
The Conqs finished 0-9 this season.

Re: Little Big Man

-November 2013-

So after the season ended I headed back home to Colorado for fall break. I never realized how important my family and friends are until your not around them anymore. I was turning 21 in two months so I couldn't quite drink legally yet, but I still loved to party. I went out with my friends almost every night, taking advantage of the days I was there, and reliving our high school days.

While I was in Colorado I decided to check out how my high school football team was doing. I showed up to one of the practices and I was surprised by how many coaches were gone from the years I played for Air Academy. But they were doing pretty good. They were 5-4 with one game remaining, and it was against our rival Pine Creek (7-2). We had to win to make the playoffs and it wasn't going to be easy. I decided to go to the game and it wasn't very pretty. They lost 34-3 on a cold Saturday morning, because the night before it snowed way too much and the game was postponed til the next day.

I was also surprised that the team actually had some college prospects. The quarterback was headed to play safety for Adams State. The left tackle was headed to Western State, the Right Tackle was headed to CSU and the running back was being recruited to play basketball for CSU-Pueblo, Western State and Mesa State. My alma mater was doing pretty good and it made me a little happy.

Things were going pretty good for me. I just finished my football season leading the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns and I was being recruited by division II schools. If I can just stay out of trouble, keep my grades up and work even harder for this upcoming season, I might just get a shot at a four year to play football but it wasn't going to be easy.

College Football Update: 2013 Bowl Season/Awards

Penn State's Redd wins Heisman by monumental margin

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Silas Redd took slow, deliberate steps to the podium -- a gear most people didn't know he had.

Then he began his acceptance speech with a huge sigh of relief and a hand over his heart.

Redd may have been the only one in the packed room with any doubt about who would win the Heisman Trophy because once again, the sensational Penn State tailback left the competition far, far behind.

Redd was voted the nation's best college football player in a landslide Saturday night over Alabama's running back Eddie Lacy, Auburn's running back Michael Dyer and Arkansas quarterback Brandon Mitchell.

Flashing uncanny acceleration and ability to change direction, the junior has conjured up memories of Gale Sayers, drawn comparisons to Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders and Tony Dorsett, and is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in April's NFL draft.

"Oh man, this is amazing," Redd said, a row of former winners lining the stage behind him. "It's truly an honor to be elected to this fraternity. I've been in college for three years and it's the first time I've been invited into a fraternity."

Redd received 2,532 points to finish 851 points ahead of Lacy, with Dyer a close third. Micthell was fourth.

The 712 first-place votes received by Redd was the second-most in Heisman history, topped only by famous USC runner -- Reggie Bush, who had 785 in 2005. Redd was first in all six regions and appeared on 99 percent of the ballots, also a Heisman record.

"I was in shock because Lacy, Dyer and Mitchell are such great players," Redd said.
