Takeoff : An Embry Riddle Eagles Dynasty

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL announced today that the University was granted acceptance to join Div I-A despite having no previous football program before. Most speculate that Embry Riddle will accept a bid to the MAC or replace C-USA's UAB BLazers. While this is most widely speculated, some other experts have suggested that the University may join the Independents; replacing either Army or Navy as one or the other are expected to accept conference invites from either the Big East, MAC, or C-USA.

At the helm of the inaugural season will be former Dallas Cowboy great Daryl Johnston. Like the service academies, the triple option will likely have a great presence for the Eagles, and most expect to see a number of Pro Sets with use of a Fullback. The depth charts will be out in the coming days before the start of the season.

The KR and PR have yet to be named. The glaring hole on both sides of the ball is the line. Blair will need protection to allow his average receivers to get open, and the line will need to push to establish any sort of running game to help a talented backfield. TE Jason Woodard could be a darkhorse in this offense.

The defensive side of the ball is strongest in the secondary, but there will need to be pressure from the Defensive Line or else these guys are going to get burned. The linebacking core is serviceable; however, the DLine, OLine, and LB'ers will be a focus in recruiting.

The Defense and the Offense are going to need to work for each other. Neither can succeed if the other is not doing their job. If the Offense does not make first downs, thus causing the defense to be on the field long then this team is going to struggle greatly as it will be an endless circle. The passing game will need to be solid to keep games close or the running game will need to grind out the clock. Overall, most would agree that this could be a long season for The Embry Riddle Eagles

Preseason Synopsis

Position by Position Breakdown

Quarter Back : Junior Patrick Blair will begin as the starter for the Eagles; however Sophomore Troy London will make a case if Blair struggles early. Blair is an athletic QB that can move around the pocket, but he does not release the ball quickly and his accuracy and throwing power are suspect. In the option, he does see some issues in pitching in stride and the key will be for him to take care of the ball and avoid costly interceptions. Troy London may be a little quicker, and could see some time in option sets.

Backfield : Troy Turner will lead the charge; a quick back that can hit the hole and has home run hitting speed if he sees an opening. FB David Jones will see some carries in Triple Option formations and in the IForm formations. Robby McCarthy is a big barreling back in short yardage situations and will also play A-Back in Flexbone sets. All three players are solid and serviceable if the line provides the holes needed. Depth is going to be the problem in the running game.

Wide Receivers : The wide receiving group are possession type wide outs with no ability to lengthen the field. This could allow teams with talented defensive backs to blitz, blitz hard, and blitz often against an under power offensive line. There isn't a burner on the field, so balls that are thrown and hit their hands need to be caught. The Tight End Woodard may be the key to the passing game if he is one on one with a line backer with the safeties up.

Offensive Line : Help needed. Nothing special outside of the Left Tackle Isaiah Fulton. The starters need to stay healthy because there is no depth whatsoever if one of them goes down. Pass Blocker could prove to be an issue. In the running game, they have the ability to make Troy Turner look really good by providing one or two blocks to open up a hole, or they're going to make Troy Turner look really bad. Blair is expected to be hit early and often, his health will be in jeopardy.

Defensive Line : Much like the Offensive Line, there is a lot to be desired. Freshman Rivas will start at RDT, and teams will key. This is without a doubt the weakest part of team that will need attention in recruiting.

Linebackers : Serviceable group led by Dobzinski and Pressley. These guys will need to give extra pressure to help the defensive line's lack thereof, and have to wrap the ball carrier up before he hits the second level. This group will have a lot of pressure, but no more than the defensive backs and safeties.

Defensive Backs : A shame that a very talented Cornerback and Safety group will get abused due to Defensive Line's lack of pressure. These guys are the best players on the team and will need BIG plays and cause turnovers to keep Embry Riddle in games. Cornerbacks McDaniel and O'Neil will be in the return game and could see some time at wideout spots given their speed and athleticism. Safety Claude Lloyd is a hard hitter that may end up leading the team in tackles given the line problems. With the exception of McDaniel, these guys will earn valuable time in their Junior year, and will look forward to support on the front lines in the years to come.

WEAKNESSES : Both Lines
STRENGTHS : Defensive Backs
SOLID : Backfield, Quarterback
QUESTION MARKS : Linebackers and Wideouts

Recruiting Strategy

The strategy for recruiting is as follows

NEEDS : 2FB, 2DE, MLB, P, FS

1. Top Priority is a DE to replace Senior starting Defensive Ends. The house is going to be thrown at a top 4* in state.

2. 4* DT . Again, the lack of depth and playmakers on the line make these two positions corner stones for rebuilding a respectable program. In State Talent or south Georgia recruit.

3. MLB who is serviceable with good size to play alongside JR Lowery next season.

4. RG : With Hughes graduating, need to establish depth on the offensive line.

5. 3* DE to compliment the number 1 and in case the #1 DE target on the board signs elsewhere. Will likely start.

6. RT to provide depth after Carlson graduates. Possible starter depending on how strong he comes in.

7. FB/HB : Power HB or pure FB with good acceleration is going to be the top priority at the seven spot on the board.

8. DT that could possibly start given the weakness at this position.

9. Speed HB to take the place of McCarthy at one of the A-Back positions. need a guy that can hit the corner and provide some lightning in the backfield alongside Turner who will be a senior.

10. Speed WR that can hit the home run and keep cornerbacks honest. Need a quick strike guy that can streak in situations and gain steps on opposing defensive backs.

11. TE to replace Woodard and provide depth. Looking for a quicker TE for passing situations out of the ace and shotgun formations.

12. Punter is needed. Take who I can get.

13. FB/HB . Again, depending on the FB depth in the recruiting class, this may be a bigger halfback. More of a blocking back.

14. Free Safety who can possibly redshirt or come in as a backup to Greer. Not an immediate need to have a FS who can start immediately.

15. CB for redshirt purposes.

16. OLB to redshirt given our OLB's will return for one or two more seasons.

17. DE to build more depth. Probable Redshirt for use in years 3 and 4.

18. MLB as a safety net in case the first choice for MLB goes elsewhere. If two are recruited, this one will likely redshirt.

19 and 20 : DE and DT to redshirt or backup in case there is a cut made on the weak defensive line. Years 3 and 4 these guys should be starting or backups who will keep starters fresh in certain situations.

21 and 22 : LG and LT who will likely backup for the majority of their career. May get to start in years 3 depending on how later recruiting classes at these positions pan out.

23 : Speed Athlete : Need speed, possible punt and kick returner in year 2.

24 : SS to redshirt

25 : FS to redshirt

26 : Wide receiver to redshirt. Looking for a bigger wideout with blocking skills that can help out the running option game later in their career.

Academics, Campus Lifestyle, Fans, and Athletic Facilities will be the major pitching points. Most players will likely come from Florida with some players picked from Georgia or Alabama. Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Florida, Colorado are pipeline states at the moment. Trying to create pipelines closer to the sunshine state.
