Re: The Arizona Cardinals - Life after Warner [Madden 08 - PC]
Heartbraking loss for Cardinals By Darren Urban Feely's missed extra point costs Redbirds Kicker Jay Feely (4) congratulated by teammate Ben Graham (5) after nailing a field goal against Oakland The Cardinals came very close to grabbing their second win of the season at home against the Oakland Raiders. What it all came down to in the end was Jay Feely's missed extra point attempt when the Cardinals had the chance to tie the game at 17. The final score, despite the offense's valiant attempt to get themselves into field goal range in the fourth quarter, was 17-16. "He (Feely) remains one of the better kickers in the league. I'm not going to let stuff like this discourage us", head coach Ken Whisenhunt said of his kicker. Feely himself seemed disheartened by the miss, saying "this is my fault." Feely's miss wasn't the only thing preventing the Cards from winning. Oakland's running back Michael Bush had a huge day, running for 207 yards on 20 carries, including a 92-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals have been weak against the run all year long, and it showed up big in this game. Meanwhile, Oakland's passing game was held in check, as Jason Campbell completed only 6 passes, attempting 12. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie managed to get an interception, his first one of the season. On the offensive side of the ball the Cardinals looked good. Derek Anderson moved the ball well, despite throwing an interception to Nnamdi Asomugha on a deep bomb to Larry Fitzgerald. Fitz was a bit quiet, getting only two catches, but Steve Breaston stepped up, catching 7 passes for 104 yards. Tight end Stephen Spach and running back Tim Hightower got themselves a touchdown, while the running game was held quiet by Oakland's defense. "We need to get that run defense sorted out", linebacker Paris Lenon commented. "Our secondary's been doing a good job but we linebackers need to step up and stop those running backs. Our opponent's have been running all over us." Lenon's message is received well by the Cardinal players, and the fans are demanding that first round-pick Dan Williams gets a chance at nose tackle, or at least would surpass Bryan Robinson on the depth chart. Veteran linebacker Gerald Hayes' return is also anticipated eagerly. "When Gerald comes back it'll be a big boost", Lenon said. "But we need to be able to play good D despite him not being here. We've got the talent, let's put it to use." Next week the Cardinals are travelling to San Diego to face off against the Chargers, and they'll certainly need run stopping there, facing off against the lightning quick Darren Sproles. Hayes won't be back for a few weeks, so rookie Daryl Washington really needs to show the talent that got him a second round selection. Code:

Re: The Arizona Cardinals - Life after Warner [Madden 08 - PC]
Cards charging up for San Diego By Darren Urban Notebook: Defense trying to fix things up before bye Chargers tight end Antonio Gates running away from Cardinal defenders The 1-2 Cardinals are trying to fix up a number of things before they hit their bye week after they play New Orleans next week, and they're facing arguably they're toughest test yet as they travel to San Diego to take on Philip Rivers and the Chargers. The Chargers are missing their number one receiver Vincent Jackson, but even without him they're still an extremely good football team. The first name you notice when you're looking at the roster is tight end Antonio Gates. Gates is one of the best, if not the best, tight end in the league, and can catch any ball thrown his way no matter the coverage. He's been described a football player with basketball skills, and the Arizona defense will have it's hands full just with him. With a talented quarterback like Rivers, Gates and wide receivers Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee can cause some serious problems. And if that's not enough, the Chargers have explosive running back Darren Sproles in their roster. Rookie Ryan Mathews is out injured, but Sproles' quickness and speed will cause difficulties for the Cardinals, who have been having troubles with stopping the run this season. The Cardinals secondary has been terrific this year, especially second year corner Greg Toler. However, the Chargers offense is so loaded with talent that they should be able to put up a lot of points, and the Cardinals need to be able to answer that. This means getting past the tough defense led by veteran linebacker Shawne Merriman. If the offense is able to match San Diego's, the Cardinals have a chance, but otherwise I think it's going to be a long Sunday for the Redbirds. Lets keep our fingers crossed. CLOSE TO BYE, CARDS HOPE FOR INJURIES TO HEAL After next week's home game against New Orleans, the Cardinals have a bye week, which gives a good chance for linebacker Gerald Hayes to return. Along with Hayes, rookie O'Brien Schofield is looking forward to his first NFL action. Schofield could provide that much needed pass rush for Arizona, but he has been missing important practice because of his injury. |

Re: The Arizona Cardinals - Life after Warner [Madden 08 - PC]
Chargers run all over Cardinals By Darren Urban Sproles picks up over 100 yards on 11 carries Darren Sproles was the talk of the day as he scored two touchdowns in the 30-13 route of the Cardinals I think it's fairly obvious what the Cardinals need right now, as they come back home for their week 5 matchup against the Saints. Run defense. Once again the Cardinals lost, this time to the San Diego Chargers, and Darren Sproles ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Philip Rivers tossed the ball around for 248 yards, finding receiver Legedu Naanee for another touchdown, and Nate Kaeding added three field goals to give the Chargers the win, while the Cardinals only scored two touchdowns and Jay Feely missed yet another extra point. Beanie Wells managed only 44 yards on 12 carries despite getting a touchdown, and Derek Anderson - who got injured halfway through but will be okay for next week - threw a touchdown pass to Steve Breaston. Rookie Max Hall was forced to attack through the air with deep balls as the Cardinals were down, and this resulted in three interceptions. A rough start to his NFL career. "I don't think those interceptions were Max's fault", receiver Larry Fitzgerald told the press. "We were forced to call the bomb a lot, and Max didn't have a chance to settle in. Anyone would have thrown those picks if put in the same situation." Still, Cardinal fans are thanking their luck that they are getting Anderson back next week, as Hall didn't impress. Anderson hasn't been spectacular, but he seems to be able to score. Now the Cardinals just need to find a way to win. That might come in the form of Gerald Hayes' return. It is yet unclear if Hayes will be able to play against the Saints, but it seems like he'll definitely play against the Seahawks after the week 6 bye. "Run defense is definitely our biggest concern", defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. "We need to look at our options and the staff needs to discuss about free agent pickups, but right now I don't think it's just the players. I need to take a look at the mirror as well, go through the playbook, think about our system. We need to find a way to fix this." The Cardinals are now 1-3, and if they keep playing like this, with no consistent offense and a horrible defense, they have no chance of repeating their NFC West championship, as the 49ers are performing well and the Rams are surprising everyone, as both are 3-1. TWO ROOKIES FIGHTING IT OUT Fans and media are questioning the choice to give Max Hall the number two spot in the Cardinals quarterback hierarchy. Sure, one half of football isn't much to base your judgement on, but fifth round-pick John Skelton is gaining popularity around Glendale. Skelton's size and arm strength seem to be the determining factors in what the fans think gives him an edge over Hall. For now, Hall is higher in the depth chart, and if Anderson goes down he'll get the starting job. Code:

Re: The Arizona Cardinals - Life after Warner [Madden 08 - PC]
Football-Freaks released a new 2011 mod for Madden 08, and I'm dying to change to that as the rosters are more to my liking. The player ratings aren't inflated and the game just feels better with it. It won't mean the end of this franchise story, but what it will mean is that I'll simulate all the way through the bye with injuries off, pretty much to the point of the season where we are in real life. So next up will be the preview of the week 7 matchup against the Seahawks. This will also mean that the records of the teams and player stats will change. Hopefully you won't stop following because of this.
