Coaching Situation Unsteady in Tampa Bay
Head coach Morris may be on the move if struggles continue

Tampa Bay, FL - As the 2010 NFL preseason is set to begin in the coming weeks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are very hesitant about their success. After finishing the regular season last year at 3-13, changes must be made to turn this team around and head coach Raheem Morris is where it all begins. Morris is serving his second season as Tampa Bay's head coach, which may not be the case for much longer if the Bucs' have another season like last year when they finished fourth in the NFC South.

Although his future is in jepordy, Morris has remained optimistic. "We're coming off a bad year," stated Morris. "We caught a couple bad breaks and did not perform on the level we should have been. Luckily we are all back and ready to start the new season. The Super Bowl champs are in the division, so we have a tough schedule ahead of us. If we play tough football like I know we can, there will be some competitive games on the horizon."

Coming from a defensive background, Morris has few weapons this year that could guarentee results game in and game out. CB Ronde Barber, the team's uncontested leader, may be hanging up his cleats soon and that could pose a huge problem for this coaching staff. Morris must utilize the strengths of his defenders to make this defense dominant once again.

Morris has three years remaining on his contract, but unless he is able to turn this team around and make signs of improvment, we can see him leaving Tampa much earlier than 2013.

Thanks man. I'm taking a break from the Bears' chise because I wanted more of a challenge. I felt like my Bears' dynasty wasn't producing realistic results. This will be my main priority. I have sliders that are like perfect now. Being able to rebuild a franchise would be an awesome idea so that's why I went with Tampa. Young team with a lot of missing pieces. Thanks again for following.

Quarterback Position Up for Grabs in Tampa
Two young quarterbacks to fight for starting role

Tampa Bay, FL - Behind every good football team, there is a good quarterback. Unfortunately for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they have not been able to rely on a consistant quarterback since Trent Dilfer in the late 90s. QB Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson will both be fighting for the starting roll this upcoming presesaon and both players have their own unique styles that will help define who should take the reins of this Buccaneer offense.

Last season, Freeman started nine games for the Buccaneers after taking over for QB Byron Leftwich. Poor numbers plagued Tampa's starter as he threw 18 interceptions, 10 touchdowns and for a completion percentage of 54. Showing some bright spots along the way, Freeman has not been able to lead his team, finishing 3-6 as a starter. Accuracy has always been a problem for Freeman and his 18 interceptions in nine games last season proved it. Giving up two interceptions a game is something you do not want from your starting quarterback.

Head coach Raheem Morris had this to say about Freeman as his team heads into the preseason, "The quarterback position is up in the air as of now. We have two great guys that can get the job done, but it all comes down to how well they play in the preseason. Josh [Freeman] helped us win a couple of big games last year against the Packers and Saints. We know he can get the job done, but he needs to limit giving the ball up. Turnovers killed us last season and we can't let that happen again."

Also playing for the starting role is second year man, Josh Johnson. Johnson has seen limited time on the field, but impressed coaches in his starting debut against the Washington Redskins with a touchdown pass on his first attempt of the game. Throughout his short career, Johnson has thrown four touchdowns and eight interceptions. One aspect of Johnson's game that should not be overlooked is his ability to scramble. Very fast and agile, Johnson can easily book down the field when receivers aren't open. This trait may be what it takes to earn the starting role come the regular season.

Both quarterbacks have the potential to be a quality starting quarterback, but they need to improve their games if they want to stay with the Buccaneers. When looking at the big picture, neither quarterback may have what it takes to be this franchises starter. But in the first year of rebuilding, they may be able to shock their coaches and become a big part of this team's offense.

2010 Preseason Week 1 Preview: Tampa Bay @ Miami

Miami, FL - Football season is once again among us and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Miami to face-off against the Dolphins in the first preseason game of the 2010 season. Tampa has many questions that need to be answered before opening day and the preseason is the perfect time to sort out these issues. Bucs' head coach Raheem Morris has a lot to think about heading into this weeks matchup.

QB Josh Freeman is currently listed as Tampa's number one quarterback, but Morris said both Freeman and QB Josh Johnson are starting on n equal level. Both players are fighting for the opening day start and this preseason will be the defining point for the two. Limiting mistakes and taking control of the offense are something both quarterbacks must prove they are capable of doing. According to Morris, "Both Johnson and Freeman will get equal time with the starting line up. We have to be fair and give both of them opportunities to show us what they can bring to the table."

Tampa's defense must be able to stop Miami's ground game and show that giving up yards on the ground will not be a problem come the start of the regular season. DT Gerald McCoy leads the relatively weak defensive line against the strong gound attack of the Dolphins' HB Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Miami's offensive line, led by veterans C Jake Grove and T Jake Long, will make it tough for the Bucs, but gaining penetration and sticking to assignments will help Tampa succeed at stopping the run.

"It's going to be good just being back on the field," stated captain LB Barrett Ruud. "We have a lot of pressure on us this season and we should be able to use it as fuel to do better. Stopping the run was a problem last season, but I think we can turn it around this year and make a name for ourselves again. I know this is only preseason, but we need to use this time to fine tune all aspects of our game. It should be an interesting year."

Saturday's game marks the beginning of the season for this Tampa Bay team and they need to use these preseason games as a way to figure out who they are and what they need to do to win games. Coach Morris has to figure out a gameplan that works with this young team and make sure his team is willing and able to carry his schemes out. A roster of fast, young players is not always a bad thing and in Tampa's case, they see it as an opportunity to build a dominant team. Win or lose, expect the Buccaneers to come out fighting in this preseason match-up.

Player to Watch
Quarterbacks Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson

Tampa Bay's biggest question mark is that of the quarterback position. With these two players fighting for their roles on the team, expect them to come out firing in Saturday's game. Freeman has a stronger arm, but you should not overlook Johnson's quickness and ability to scramble when in trouble. First impressions are huge, so look for both quarterbacks to put on a show for the coaches and fans.

Prediction
Tampa Bay 14, Miami 23

Buccaneers Steal Win Over Miami
Elbert Mack's INT return seals victory

Miami, FL - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) started the preseason off right in the form of a 20-13 win over the favored Miami Dolphins (0-1). Buccaneers cornerback Elbert Mack intercepted a Chad Pennington pass in the third quarter and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown to take a 20-6 lead. The Dolphins answered with a touchdown drive to start the fourth, but were unable to overcome the 14 point deficit.

Defense set the tone throughout the game as each team was held under 275 total offensive yards. Tampa gained only 226 yards of offense and while the Bucs' passing game never seemed to takeoff, the rushing game put up 123 yards against a solid Miami defense. Halfback Carnell "Cadillac" Williams lead the ground attack with 59 yards on 13 attempts. Derrick Ward contributed 50 yards and quarterback Josh Johnson added 14 yards on two carries, including a eight yard run for a first down in the fourth quarter.

As mentioned, the Bucs' defense played well throughout the game, holding Miami to 261 yards and scoring both a touchdown and a safety. The safety came late in the second quarter when Miami offensive linemen Jake Long was called for holding in their own endzone. This cut the Dolphins' lead to 6-5 heading into halftime. Tampa's defensive tackle Brian Price lead the team with two sacks and safety Tanard Jackson lead with six tackles. Head coach Raheem Morris was very pleased with the way his defense played.

"We made a lot of plays when we needed to," stated Morris. "It was nice to see the guys out there making plays and getting stops. We gave up a couple of big drives to start the game, but luckily we were able to hold them to a couple of field goals. Now we just have to make sure to carry this intensity into next weeks match-up and eventually the regular season."

Tampa's quarterbacks Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson both had average days with their strong suits being clearly represented. Freeman threw the games only passing touchdown in the form of a six yard pass to wide receiver Reggie Brown to take a 13-6 lead on the first drive after halftime. Freeman ended the day, however, only completing four of 11 passes for 46 yards. Josh Johnson seemed to have a better day than Freeman, even though he did not throw a touchdown. Johnson finished the day completing five of 12 passes for 61 yards and, more importantly, led the Bucs' offense on several long drives, including the games final series to kill three minutes and secure the victory.

"[Josh] Freeman had the key touchdown pass to take the lead, but we would of liked to see more out of him," stated Morris. "Keep in mind it's only been one game so we didn't expect a four touchdown day. We were happy to see [Josh] Johnson in the fourth quarter. He put together very nice drives throughout the game with both his arm and his legs. He adds a whole new aspect to the game. We will continue to see how they play in the coming weeks and hopefully have a decision made by opening day."

The Buccaneers will head into week two to play the 0-1 Kansas City Chiefs at home. Both Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson must continue to prove themselves as a capable starting quarterback. The Bucs' still have pleanty of time to figure out their issues, so be sure to look for much improvement in the coming weeks.
