Scouting Report Ian McLaughlin

McLaughlin is about as fundamentally smooth a quarterback as you will find in this class. There are very few prospects at the quarterback position that possess the quick, compact and fluid delivery often compared to Peyton Manning in terms of leadership, football smarts, and accuracy. McLaughlin has adequate height and a strong build. He is a pocket passer that could play in any offensive scheme and has split time under center and in the shotgun in this scheme. He is a good athlete and displays good feet, set-up quickness and balance within the pocket. Shows presence and poise and can sidestep the rush to get the ball out quickly. This is what makes him so hard to defend. The ball pops off his hand and his release is so fluidly quick that it is difficult to rush him. There is little to no wasted motion in his mechanics and he is a very consistent passer fundamentally. He is capable of making all the throws to all three levels of the field when his feet are set however he will at times throw off his back foot on the deep ball the it will sail on him, but when planted and balanced he can zip the ball downfield and stretch it vertically. He is extremely accurate and makes very good decisions with the ball. Leads receivers, can throw to a spot, has great confidence in his mind and ability to decisively work through progressions. He is capable because of his release of sneaking the ball into tight spots and windows both short and intermediate. There are traits that Lemay possesses that are unique to him and make him stand out. He is gritty, tough and highly competitive. Plays with confidence and knows he is good. Overall, Lemay is very good and has not yet hit his ceiling for development. Florida State got quite a talent, and although he may not start right away with Christian Ponder under center. Look for McLaughlin to make a push for the starting job his 2nd year as a red shirt freshmen.

Scouting report for Jay Randolph

This is a prospect at this stage that possesses just about every physical trait or measurable you could want in a high school prospect. He displays a terrific arm, he possesses great size on a muscular frame and his overall athleticism is off the charts. Randolph plays in the shotgun spread which is ideal for his tools, but he could easily play in the pro-set and from under center and be just as big of a threat. Stands tall and can scan the field from within the pocket. Ball jumps out of his hand with great velocity and authority when his feet are set. Can make every throw including those into tight spots at intermediate ranges. Can drive the ball deep and really stretch the field when he is balanced and transfers his weight from his back foot. Appears to show quality accuracy overall to all areas of the field and has a knack for throwing off balance and still hitting the strike zone. He is strong and Randolph is really smooth and fluid. He is dangerous when improvising with his quick feet and buying a second chance. Throws well on the move and can throw back against his body. The intriguing thing about Driskel is that he is much more polished as a passer in person than he is on tape. In a workout setting he is crisp, shows timing, footwork and fundamentally is sound with his delivery, but on film he is much more of a backyard player with a gunslinging mentality. If there were a negative about Driskel at this stage it would be that he takes some risks with the ball and locks onto targets for too long. Needs to enhance his progressions and get from one guy to the other quicker. Gets away with "potential turnover" type throws at this level due to his arm. Overall, Driskel is the total package when it comes to measurables and physical tools. He is like Jake Locker physically coming out. Is also a great baseball player. He has a chance to be special and is a highly competitive prospect with a high work ethic. Although not as talented as McLaughlin he has just as much leadership ability. Randolph could be seeing the field by his Junior season if he continues to work hard.
