"
There a first for everything"
East Lansing, MI - Three weeks down already, as we now enter into week 4 as teams continue to do battle with each other to make it to the mountain top and claim that beloved National Championship! This week we bring you West Virginia (1-1) traveling to the spartan stadium to take on (2-0) Michigan State. This should be a every interesting match up as West Virginia is coming a a bad beating they took from Alabama while Michigan state got to rest their guys and are fresh to try and make a run for that championship! with the #13 Pass defense West Virginia will be tested all game by a great QB in MSU. The #7 Rush Defense will also be tested today as West Virginia has a stellar back that could do everything and anything! Should be fun to see who claws their way to the top. Now we take you down to the field for the coin toss.
West Virginia lost the coin takes and Michigan State deferred. WVU gets the ball to start the game as their spread offense takes the field, MSU wasted no time to attack as they forced a fumble and recovered the ball on WVU first drive of the game. Now the spartan has the ball with a very short field to work with. The Spartan hot offense comes out onto the field being lead by Junior Kirk Cousins thru the air and Sophomore Edwin Baker on the ground. First play of their drive and Cousins waste no time as he connects with Junior Bj Cunningham on a 11 Yd pass. Next play baker gets his hands on the ball and works his magic as he punches the ball into the endzone for a 24 TD rush
0-7. The Mountaineers takes the field once again after that costly fumble and gave up a score also. They wasted little time as they carved up Michigan State Secondary to move the ball down the field quickly yet very time consuming. 1st and 10 on MSU 19 yard line, Sophomore HB Shawne Alston takes the hand off from Sophomore QB Geno Smith for a 19 Yd TD tying up the game
7-7. Michigan State offense comes back onto the field hoping to remake their magic and get the ball into the endzone. Cousins takes the snap and drops into the pocket as he tries to fit the ball into a tight space only to have it get picked off by Senior MLB Pat Lazear. West Virginia wasted no time to capitalize on the INT as Geno hands the ball of to Senior Noel Divine for a 16 Yd TD
14-7. After that INT the Spartans wasn't gonna let them control the game but MSU struggled on their drive and got a 3 and out having to punt the ball away. Geno and his offense takes the field along with the lead, as they setup for their first play. Geno drops back from the center and into the pocket as he tries to hit one of his receiver only for it to get INT by Sophomore OLB Chris Norman who takes it down to the 2 Yd line of WVU.
Norman show his Awareness
Now MSU goal line set takes the field as Cousins pitches the ball out to Baker who punches the ball in from 2 Yds out to tie back up the game
14-14. Michigan State Defense were able to hold their ground against West Virginia on their next play forcing them to punt the ball back to the Spartans. Now with the ball back and the game time, MSU hoped this would be the drive that would give them the lead. Cousins on the other hand couldn't keep the ball from the defense as Junior FS Robert Sand would INT the ball for the 2x in the game.
West Virginia Stepped up again and force Cousins to throw the ball when he didn't want to. Second half begins and the mountaineers stretch the field with their speed but once again Spartans Defense stood their ground and made a stand forcing WVU to settle for a FG
17-14. Cousins and his troops takes the field down by three. MSU moved the ball down the field as their Run game finally was given some breathing room and Cousins was able to hit his Receivers perfectly! Out of the shotgun with a 4 WR set on the field on WVU 11 Yard line, Cousins would take the snap and hits Cunningham on a Slant route for a Touchdown and once again taking the lead from the mountaineers
17-21. The Mountaineers takes the field and looks to top their score with a score of its own, as they got a good head of steam but The Spartan defense put that fire out quickly. Under 2 minutes left and Cousins along with his offense would get the ball back, first play of the drive would be a handoff to baker who only gains a 1 then they would try again but this time he would be stood up in the back for -4 yards forcing them into a passing situation. Cousins throw yet again another INT this time to Senior Brandon Hogan making it 3 time cousins been picked off in the game. The Mountaineers couldn't capitalize on their INT and had to settle for a FG making the game a 1 point difference
20-21. Under a minute left and MSU had the ball as they tried to strike hard and fast so they could maintain the lead they had, but WVU stood strong and didn't budge under the pressure.
Another Sack in the books
With the second half underway and MSU gets the ball to begin the half. Cousins comes back onto the field hoping to forget about his horrible first half performance, but it would just follow him as he threw an INT to start off their first drive of the half. After the INT hopefully WVU could capitalize on their chance to take the lead in the game. The Mountaineers managed to move the ball down the field and Noel was able to punch the ball in from 4 yards out for the lead
27-21. Surprisingly cousins comes back onto the field as Coach Dantonio hasn't benched him yet but he would had wished he had as Cousins threw another INT which would be his 5 in the game.
Overthrown pass
Once again Geno and his squad takes the field and was able to move the ball down the field but MSU def hasn't given up yet and manage to stop them from scoring and had to settle for a FG
30-21. Michigan State struggled to get anything even close to the endzone. The mountaineer moved the ball at will either thru the air or on the ground they would have success as they drove down the field entering into MSU territory but as always the spartan Def shines when they can work with short fields, as they held WVU to another FG
32-21. Both teams couldn't get anything going for the rest of the QTR.
The final QTR begins with the ball in Michigan State hand, as Cousins finally able to calm himself down and show signs of his old self connecting with his WR's for big yardage down the field which would set them up 1 yard out of the goal line.
Nichoal showing great focus to catch the ball
Cousins hands the ball to baker who hasn't seen the ball all half as he punches the ball in for the score and once again for the 2 point Conversion
32-29.With a two point lead Geno takes his troops onto the gridiron. West Virginia HB's would take care of most of the work as the Spartans defense couldn't stop them at all. In MSU territory WVU takes the ball into the air and is successful with it, as none of Michigan State Secondaries could keep up with the no-huddle offense that West Virginia was running. 6 Yards out from the yard line as Geno hands the ball off to his HB Hargett who is able to just run up the middle untouched for the score
39-29. Under 4 minutes with the ball as MSU tries to get some kind of comeback underway, They had no luck either on the ground or air as they wounded up going 3 and out and failed to convert their 4th down attempt which turned the ball over to Virginia who just sat on the ball til the clock ran out to win the game.
