Re: Gus Malzahn: Offensive Genuis (NCCA 12)

Auburn, Alabama- After helping lead the Auburn Tigers to their 2nd National Championship in school history Gus Malzahn turned down a reported head coaching offer from Vanderbilt. The deal was worth about $3 million dollars a year nearly 6 times that of his annual salary at Auburn. Subsequently, after winning the title and helping Cam Newton win the Heisman trophy Malzahn decided to remain with Auburn as offensive coordinator where he will reportedly earn $1.3 million a year.

Here is an a sampling of questions Gus Malzahn was asked in a recent interview.

Q: Coach, why did you decide to turn down the Vanderbilt head coaching offer?
A: Look like I said previously somewhere down the road I'd like to be the head guy at a program but for right now I'm very happy at Auburn, I'm in no hurry. I'm only 45 look at a guy like Joe Paterno he's been coaching longer than I've been alive.

Q: How do you replace a player like Cam Newton? Why did Russell Wilson end up turning Auburn down?
A: You don't. That being said we have guys here who can get the job done I'm not taking anything away from them but Cam's a special player. I'm very open to who will be our guy this year it could be Trotter, Moseley, or even Kiehl Frazier our freshman. I don't know for sure yet and I think the only way that we will know for sure is after the first few games. On the second question I can't comment on that one.

Q: Coach Gus how do you think Michael Dyer will perform this year after breaking Bo Jackson's freshman record?
A: Dyer's a stud no doubt about it we're going to look to him to be a big part in our offense especially early on because of the quarterback situation.

Also in the interview the AD for Auburn told the press what is expected of Malzahn over the life of his contract.

Game Recap
The first quarter came and went as neither team was able to get on the board there were a couple three and outs exchanged and a short drive by Auburn that resulted in a punt only 7 plays later.

The second quarter started off with a 12 yard TD pass to Phil Lutzenkirchen off a QB bootleg from Barrett Trotter. (7-0) After a 3 and outs by Utah State, Auburn picked up another TD on a 2 yard pass from Clint Moseley to Emory Blake. (14-0) The score would remain the same for the rest of the half with the teams trading possessions.

The third quarter wasn't very exciting until the end when Michael Dyer burst in from 1 yard on fourth down to lengthen the lead. (21-0) Utah State used the next possession to put their only points on the board with a 46 yard field goal. (21-3) Auburn also added a field goal from 38 yards to close the quarter. (24-3)

The fourth quarter saw more scoring on the ground from Auburn with a 26 yard run broken off by Michael Dyer for his second of the day. (31-3) Freshman Quan Bray also added a TD on a 2 yard run to finish off the scoring on the day. (38-3)
Top Performers
Michael Dyer-25 rush, 145 yards, 2TD
Onterio McCaleb- 5 rush, 104 yards, long 56

Coach Malzahn Post Game Snibbits

"I'll be honest I was very pleased with the rushing attack today 284 and 3 TDs is a nice stat line."

"I'm more than upset with our passing game however, we were 10-25 for 114 yards sure we had 2 TDs but only because of the running game being so good. We need to get a guy back there that can lead this team from here on out it's an open competition for the starting job. I'll do it by committee if I have to."
