West Virginia Outlasts Indiana in Overtime

Morgantown, WV -- In a game that featured two quarterbacks that combined for over 900 yards passing and eight touchdowns, and two offenses that combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense, there was plenty of get you off of your seat moments. A valiant Indiana squad fought until the very end on the road against a very talented West Virginia squad. A missed field goal by Indiana n the second overtime, though left the door open for the Mountaineers, who shut the door with a field-goal of their own.

"Yes, the loss hurts, but I can't hang my head because we fought hard and had a chacne to win. A few less mistakes and we are sitting here talking about a win. I feel we're on the right path but it will take time." -Mike Leach

Ted Bolser makes a catch over the middle.

Dusty Kiel hits Dre Muhammad for an 81 yard touchdown.

Adam Replogle sacks the quarterback.

Kiel hits Kofi Hughes for a 75 yard TD late in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Andrew Bui runs over an Indiana defender on his way to a 43 yard touchdown.

Indiana Hangs on for 38-35 Win Over Penn State

Dusty Kiel Passes for School Record 517 Yards

Kofi Huhges looks in a pass before scoring a 30 yard TD.

Bloomington, IN -- The school passing record has now been set three times in just five games this year by sophomore quarterback Dusty Kiel. Kiel shattered his own record by throwing for 517 yards and five touchdowns. Aside from being sacked eight times, the Indiana passing attack was clicking on all cylinders. Their defense, however, wasn't. Penn State tallied a total of 518 yards of offense but fell short in their bid for a road-win. Two missed field goals inside the Indiana 30 yard line turned out to be the difference.

"I don't care how we get the win as long as we win. But our defense has to get better. We can't expect to be in shootouts every week and win. Still, we're off to a 1-0 start in conference play and I'm pleased with the effort our team played with today." -Mike Leach

Dre Muhammad watches a pass come in before scoring a 51 yard tocuhdown.

Dusty Kiel hits Kofi Hughes on a corner route for a 30 yard touchdown.

Hoosiers Fall to Illini at Home

Bloomington, IN -- Indiana was perfect on the season at home but that came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Illinois Fighting Illini stymied the Indiana offense for much of the game. Indiana did tally 460 yards of offense but moving the ball down-field was a tough task as the Illinois defense caused three turnovers.

"I feel like every time we got any momentum Illinois would make a big play and we'd be right back at square one. We've got some things to work on before next week before we go to Wisconsin, that's for sure." -Mike Leach

Re: Swing Your Sword: Mike Leach's Second Chance

Hoosiers Get Revenge on Badgers in 63-31 Win

Madison, WI -- It was just one season ago Indiana suffered a humiliating 83-20 loss at the hands of Wisconsin. What a difference a year makes. Under new head-coach Mike Leach, for one day at least, the Indiana offense clicked from the word go and there was little Wisconsin could do to slow them down. The very first offensive play from scrimmage from for Indiana was a 70 yard pass from Dusty Kiel to Duwyce Wilson, setting up the first of nine Indiana touchdowns.

On the first play from scrimmage Duwyce Wilson turned this pass into a 70 yard gain; it was just a preview of a long day for the Wisconsin defense.

Kofi Hughes breaks a tackle on his way to a 63 yard touchdown.

Indiana quarterback Dusty Kiel had another big game with 429 yards passing on 21/31 passing and four touchdowns in Mike Leach's pass happy offense. Kofi Hughes was Kiel's favorite target on the day catching seven passes for 151 yards and three scores. Both Indiana running backs had good games as well, as Darius Willis gained 85 yards on 15 carries and found the endzone once, and Nick Turner 72 yards on just six carries for two touchdowns.

Nick Turner escapes a Wisconsin defender and turns it into a 64 yard touchdown.

"Obviously I wasn't here last year but I still remember seeing the 83-20 final from last year's game and couldn't believe it. That's not a score you forget. We weren't necessarily trying to run up the score but I'd be lying if I wasn't wanting some revenge for my guys after last year's humiliating defeat."

Dre Muhammad looks in a pass before outrunning the Wisconsin defense for a 43 yard touchdown.

Re: Swing Your Sword: Mike Leach's Second Chance

Indiana Falls Short on Last Second Field Goal

Iowa City, IA -- Dusty Kiel raises his hands in excitement and disbelief. Kofi Hughes turns and points back down the field at his quarterback and howls with excitement. Why? Because the two had just connected for a 91 yard touchdown with just 0:35 to go in the game and had tied the score at 42. Overtime, right? Wrong. Iowa took the kickoff and with all three timeouts needed just three completions to be in Mike Meyer's field goal range. Meyer calmly nailed the 44 yard field goal as time expired to give the Hawkeyes a narrow 45-42 victory.

"I hate it. I hate it for our players who fought their tails off to keep us in that game and put us in position to win. Losing like that, at the final gun, hurts worse than anything. I was so proud with how we played, especially on offense, and to lose like that well...it kills me." -Mike Leach

The two teams combined to score 45 fourth quarter points after playing to a 28-28 stand-still through three quarters. Iowa tallied 602 yards of total offense while Indiana gained 526. Iowa quarterback James Vanderberg went 24/43 for 336 yards and two touchdowns, while Dusty Kiel for Indiana was 22/46 for 423 yards and three touchdowns.
