Preseason Week 2 Cuts
__________________________________________________

Josh Looney

The Chiefs organization announced the waiving of wide receiver Terrance Copper and running back Dantrell Savage.

Waived (2)

WR Terrance Copper (6-0 207)

An undrafted free agent that was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys in 2004. After the 2005 season he was cut and signed by the New Orleans Saints where he played from 2006 until October of 2008. He then had a short stint with the ravens before getting signed by Kansas City.

Despite good hands and superb route running skills, Copper did little to impress coaches. He faced great difficulty beating corners off the line of scrimmage and was unable to get separation from defenders.

RB Dantrell Savage (5-8 182)

Savage like Copper was an undrafted free agent that was signed by the Chiefs in 2008. He carried just 15 times for 63 yards and a 3.5 average.

Was projected to be the spell back for Jamaal Charles once Larry Johnson departed but the coaching staff was unimpressed by the Oklahoma State product. His carrying of the football was sloppy, he had a great deal of difficulty following blocks, didn't hit open holes, and showed poor hands when thrown to out of the backfield.

Preseason Position Battles Update

Below are some of the position battles that our coaching staff will be keeping an eye on in Kansas City this preseason. While most of the battles are for backup positions a good showing will be looked upon favorably during next seasons battles.

Position: Quarterback
NAMEOVR
STATS
Matt Cassel
7817/37, 186 yds, 1td, 1int
Brodie Croyle
65
16/28, 182 yds, 1td, 1int
Matt Gutierrez
587/14, 113 yds, 1td, 2int
Analysis: Despite a rather rough start in week one Matt Cassel bounced back with a strong performance against Minnesota when he received extra reps in the second half. Brodie Croyle's play to date has been mediocre. He struggled heavily in the starting role last week, throwing an interception late in the 1st half and almost costing the team a touchdown when he lost track of the play clock. Matt Gutierrez's play was abysmal, forcing throws into coverage and tossing two critical late game interceptions. While out of the race for the starting job he could still win the number two job with a strong showing in the final contests.
Favorite: Matt Cassel
Position: Halfback
NAMEOVR
STATS
Jackie Battle
65
5 att, 13 yds, 2.6 avg, 1td
Javarris Williams
(R)9 att, 30 yds, 3.3 avg, 0td
Analysis: With Dantrell Savage being waived both Jackie Battle and rookie Javarris Williams will make the team. However the spot for the backup role to Jamaal Charles is still wide open.
Favorite: Jackie Battle
Position: Fullback
NAMEOVR
STATS
Mike Cox
70
Tim Castille
70

Analysis: The run blocking by both fullbacks hasn't lived up to expectations and an outsider could be brought in if the coaching staff isn't won over.
Favorite: None
Position: Wide Receiver
NAMEOVR
STATS
Laurent Robinson 7010 rec, 169 yds, 3 tds, 4 dp
Danny Amendola 67
7 rec, 90 yds, 0 tds, 2 dp
Bobby Wade 741 rec, 8 yds, 0 tds, 0 dp
Lance Long
64
3 rec, 28 yds, 0 tds, 1 dp
Analysis: The releasing of Terrance Copper and Quintin Lawrence have helped clear up a very murky wide receiver battle. Two strong perfrormances from Laurent Robinson and Danny Amendola now have them projected as the number 2 and 3 options in the offense. Porous play from Bobby Wade has him falling into the number 4 spot. Lance Long has done enough to secure his job for this season at least.
Favorites: Laurent Robinson, Danny Amendola
Position: Tight End
NAMEOVR
STATS
Leonard Pope
762 rec, 29 yds, 0 tds, 2 dp
Sean Ryan
74
3 rec, 20 yds, 0 tds, 0 dp
Brad Cottam
664 rec, 41 yds, 0 tds, 0 dp
Jake O'Connell
(R)2 rec, 19 yds, 0 tds, 0 dp
Analysis: Leonard Pope bounced back after a poor first outing reeling in two catches. Brad Cottam also had great game catching four passes. Sean Ryan and Jake O'Connell have failed to make any real impression.
Favorites: Leonard Pope, Sean Ryan, Brad Cottam
Position: Middle Linebacker
NAMEOVR
STATS
Corey Mays
713 tkl, 4 tkl ast, 1 tfl, 1 int
Jovan Belcher
(R)
4 tkl, 3 tkl ast, 1 tfl
Analysis: Corey Mays has been a solid compliment to Derrick Johnson and is well on his way to winning the second MLB position.
Favorite: Corey Mays
Position: Cornerback
NAMEOVR
STATS
Donald Washington
(R)3 tkl, 5 tkl ast, 1 pd
Mike Richardson
63
3 tkl, 4 tkl ast
Mike Mickens
661 tkl, 1 tkl ast
Analysis: Another crowded position now has some clarity with Travis Daniels and Maurice Leggett gone. The battle for the nickel and dime corner positions is still wide open.
Favorites: Donald Washington, Mike Richardson

Bowers Take

Our boys had another rough go of it in Minnesota. Though we suffered the same outcome as last week, their was improvement, which is all I can ask for at this point.

We have a big home game against the (2-0) Seattle Seahawks rapidly approaching. I'm fairly optimistic that the team will build on last weeks success and finally snag that first W.

Go Chiefs!

Regards,
Ross Bowers

McKenzie

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two days ago the New England Patriots waived 3rd round draft pick Tyrone McKenzie to make room for DE Josh Thomas.

The Kansas City Chiefs organization which has made a myriad of moves over the last few weeks made another sending out a claim for McKenzie. No other club submitted a claim so the Chiefs were able to offer the rookie a contract. The terms or length of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
