Why Can’t Every Game Be Played In Kent?

The Golden Flash started Week 5 with quite a dilemma at hand. Not only did they have a game against a 2-2 Ball State squad that was trying to establish themselves amongst the other MAC East competition but Kent State also had a few recruits visiting to get a tour of the campus. Also Kent State needed to find a way to win this game because with a 1-3 overall record and 0-2 in MAC play, they could almost kiss their chances at a MAC title good bye and just hope they could get to 6 wins for a bowl game. Lucky for Coach Cravens, he got Anthony Meray back this game and he was a major boost to the team against Ball State. Meray, Keith, and Durden managed to rush for 216 yards, the Golden Flash’s first game rushing over 100 yards singularly for a player and also as a team. “We finally played to our potential.” Said Coach Cravens, “We also did another thing I felt was key and that was not turn the ball over. We didn’t turn the ball over and managed to force some turnovers along the way. Doing this managed to keep the ball in our hands, and if the ball is in our hands then the other team doesn’t have a chance to put points on the board. So I’m proud of the guys, I’m giving them a day off from practice but then we have to come back ready to play since we have a game against Eastern Michigan next week and they seem to be another team that is not a joke in the MAC. Eastern Michigan stayed in the game with Michigan State a week ago and those players will play with fuel inside them that will try to boost their skill”.

As far as the recruiting visits went, the players managed to enjoy themselves and all left with at least a B for the trip, despite many of the players Most and Very High things being D attributes for the program. Now many players have Kent State as their number one choice on their interest list and hopefully Coach Cravens can seal the deal on many of them and have a solid first recruiting class as he tries to establish the future of Kent State Football.

Eastern Michigan Eagles

Kent State was big off a win last week against Ball State and hoped to carry the momentum into their game with Eastern Michigan. Eastern Michigan was 1-3 going into the game and 2 of their losses came against Michigan powers, so Coach Cravens knew the game would be anything but easy. “I am hoping that Meray can get off to another great start and lead our team to victory” said Coach. And the game began that way, the defense forced a stop and the offense moved the ball down the field even though their drive led to a punt. Then that’s when the tides turned in Eastern Michigan’s favor because Greene, their running back, awoke and didn’t turn back. He willed his team in the game, eventually ending with 238 rushing yards for the game. “That is simply too much” said Coach Cravens. “We can’t expect to win a game if we give up 238 yards to one player. That really hurt us and since it was done by runs, the clock continued to tick and we lost the time of possession battle. Overall, my team played well and tried to hang in there and I credit them for that. But now we have to pick up our heads and prepare for a 2-3 Army team that is hungry to try and get to .500 just like we want to. Plus since its another away game, we have to do our prep work to try and steal a victory from somewhere.”

The loss drops Kent State to 6th place in the MAC East standings with a 1-2 conference record. With 4 of the 5 teams ahead of them still on their schedule, Kent State has the potential to turn their season around and make a MAC Championship game, but they have to start soon because with the halfway mark soon approaching, there may not be time left in the season for Kent to make a late run.

It took them 7 weeks, but Kent State finally got win number 3 and improves their overall record to .500. “I knew this team was capable of it,” Said Coach Cravens, “But this isn’t enough for us. We are a hungry team and we want a chance at a MAC title. These kids want a chance to be on television and play in a bowl game. So we have to still improve and continue to win. But after this performance, hopefully it is a sign that the team is headed in the right direction and can spark some momentum for the remainder of the season.” The shutout victory was Kent State’s first of the season and it could not have come at a better time with MAC Rival, Western Michigan coming into town next week. The Broncos have had a drop off from last season, going into the game with a losing record up to this point after their incredible season a year ago.

Also, with 3 victories now and half the season done for Kent State, they have to look ahead at their schedule and see that the toughest games of the MAC will be played in the upcoming weeks. 4 of their 6 next opponents play in the MAC East division and 3 of those opponents are currently ahead of them in the standings, with Buffalo being the only other team ahead of them that they won’t meet again. If Kent State can win 4 of their last 5 MAC games, they could very well be in contention for representing the MAC East. They would just need a little luck and need Buffalo to also lose one more game, but in the world of college football, everyone knows that anything can happen on a Saturday.
