The World Gridiron Football Cup (NCAA 13)

Introduction
This set-up will require a bit of suspension of disbelief...as it requires you to believe that Gridiron Football (aka American Football) has taken root and become at least semi-popular around the globe. So with that premise established, I felt that it was time that the game of football we all know and love had its own world cup.

How it works
The tournament structure will be the same as the FIFA world cup, but with half the teams. I'll be using NCAA 13 and creating 16 teambuilder teams, representing various countries, draw them into 4 groups of 4 and have a group stage followed by a knock-out stage.

The House Rules
7 minute quarters
Games will be played at Neutral sites (revealed here)
All American Difficulty
Oraeon's slider (with minor tweaks)
In the select team screen, I'll flip a coin. Tails, I control the away team, Heads, I control the home team.

You may (and are encouraged to) post in this thread at any time. I always appreciate feedback.

Update area:
-All teambuilder teams are created. Games will begin to be played on Monday, the 23rd.
You can find the Teambuilder teams on TB if you search Lionden 56 or Korea Republic (you can search any of the teams, really, but this one has the fewest hits so you can find my team easier).

Side note: For posts after this one, any time that you see a spoiler box

UNITED STATES TO HOST FIRST WORLD GRIDIRON FOOTBALL CUP

July 18, 2012
NEW YORK (AP) – The United States have been selected by a unanimous vote to host the first ever World Gridiron Football Cup. Gridiron Football, also known as American Football, has been slowly growing in popularity outside of the United States, and now will hold its first ever major international competition.

The details were worked out Tuesday night in New York City, with representatives from the NFL, CFL, European Gridiron League, and Japanese League in attendance. Officials say the meetings went smoothly, and one NFL official in attendance said, “It just makes sense for the US to host the first one.”

American officials raised concerns about the timing of the event, as it will happen during the NFL and college seasons. This conflict will prevent many professional and college athletes from participating for the US. But in the end, they agreed that the US would still be able to field a strong team, and that the timing of the event was more important.

The event will mirror its FIFA equivalent, with a group stage followed by knock-out rounds. Each group will consist of 4 teams, and the top 2 teams in each group will advance to the elimination rounds. The games will be played in 8 different venues, which will be announced at a later date.

Qualification matches will begin in one month's time. The United States receives an automatic qualification for being the host nation. The draw will consist of four teams from four different regions: North & Central America, South America, Europe, and APAC. No African nations showed an interest in participation.

Matches begin in October, with the Draw Show happening on September 21st. Broadcast rights for the matches and Draw Show are still in negotiations.

BRISTOL, CN – (AP)

TONY DUNGY TO COACH TEAM USA

July 20, 2012
BRISTOL, CN - (ESPN)

Tony Dungy, current analyst and former coach of the Indianpolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers has accepted the job to coach the United States in the first ever World Gridiron Football Cup.

“It's a great honor to even be asked,” said Dungy in a press conference announcing the hire today. “I think this is a great opportunity to bring our country together as fans, and to grow our sport across the globe.”

Dungy will have free reign to select the rest of his staff, according to a release from the National Football League after the conference. The NFL is serving as the official governing body until an official international committee is elected.

“Tony is a perfect fit for us,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “He is a fantastic head coach, has a passion for the sport, and he can really dedicate himself to making team USA as successful as possible.”

Coach Dungy will have a skeleton of a roster to work with. The official United States select team is comprised mostly of college athletes, many of whom have committed to staying with their colleges during the Cup.

“We’ll make it work,” said Dungy during the press conference. “It might have to be a little unconventional. It might have to be with some guys you’ve never heard of. But we’ll make it work.”

Dungy is 148-79 in his professional coaching career. He led the Colts to a Super Bowl title in 2006.

TOURNAMENT VENUES AND DATES ANNOUNCED, FEATURE COWBOY STADIUM, ROSE BOWL

July 24th, 2012
NEY YORK – (ESPN)

The NFL has announced the venues that will play host to the matches of the 2012 World Gridiron Football Cup.

Eight stadiums across five states will host matches.

Group A will see the west coast, with their games taking place in California. The Rose Bowl, home of the UCLA Bruins and the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio, along with the Los Angeles Coliseum, home of the USC Trojans will host.

Group B will travel south, to the host state of Texas. Cowboy Stadium, current home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and the AT&T Cotton Bowl will host one set of games. The original home of the Cotton Bowl, Cotton Bowl Stadium on the Texas State Fair grounds will also host. It is the current site of the Texas/Oklahoma rivalry game.

Group C’s games will take place in the Midwest, and is the only group to play in multiple states. Lucas Oil Stadium, host of the NFL’s Indianpolis Colts and the Big Ten Championship Game will host three games from group C. Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions and the MAC championship, will host the other three.

Finally, Group D will represent the east coast, with its games taking place in Pennsylvania. Lincoln Financial Field will be one site. The Linc currently hosts the Philadelphia Eagles and the annual Army/Navy game. The second set of games will be hosted by Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburg Steelers and the Pitt Panthers.

The quarterfinal matches will be held in one venue from each of the regions. The Semi-finals and finals will take place in Cowboys Stadium.

The NFL also announced the dates for the games. Group A will play their games on Mondays, October 1st, 8th, and 15th. Group B will play on Tuesdays, the 2nd, 9th, and 16th. Groups C and D follow the same pattern for the Wednesdays and Thursdays of those weeks. Exact dates for the elimination round games haven’t been released yet, but it is expected they will take place over the following two weeks.

QUALIFYING BEGINS FOR WORLD CUP

August 18, 2012

BRISTOL, CN – (ESPN)

Canada and Mexico will join the US as representatives of North and Central America in the first World Cup. Mexico rolled past Jamaica 42-7 to earn the top qualification spot, while Canada narrowly escaped Haiti 24-21 to finish second. Jamaica and Haiti will play in Mexico City on Wednesday to determine the third and final qualifier from the region.

The South American qualifiers are also nearing completion. Both Brazil and Argentina will clinch spots with wins in either of their next two matches. Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, and Bolivia are all still in contention for the final two spots.

The European and APAC regions begin their qualifiers on Monday. Germany is the heavy favorite from Europe, while Japan and Australia are expected to battle for the top spot in APAC.

The European qualification rounds will take place at Wembly Stadium in England, Olympic Stadium in Munich, and Camp Nou in Barcelona. The APAC qualifiers will be held in the Tokyo Dome in Japan, Allianz Stadium in Syndey, and National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.

HAITI PUNCHES TICKET TO WORLD CUP

August 22, 2012

MEXICO CITY - ESPN

A late fumble doomed Jamaica as Haiti earned the final spot in the North and Central American region. Jamaica trailed 21-17 with time winding down in the 4th, but were in the red zone and seemed to be ready to strike. DE James Elan saved the game for Haiti with a sack and forced fumble that gave Haiti the ball and chance to run out the clock.

Alfonso Walker ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns for Jamaica, but it wasn't enough to survive the Haitian passing game.

Jean Pompey threw for 320 yards with two touchdowns of his own, including the game winner. Oldin Surin added a rushing touchdown to the tally as well.

Haiti joins Mexico, Canada, and the US as qualified teams for the Cup. Brazil and Argentina look to punch their tickets with wins or draws tomorrow.

3 MORE TICKETS PUNCHED - QUALIFIER ROUNDUP

August 25th, 2012

SAO PAULO - ESPN

3 more teams have qualified for the World Gridiron Football cup. Brazil advanced with a 27-14 victory over Chile, while Argentina survived Ecuador 17-14 to advance.

The results leave 3 teams vying for two spots in South America, with each controlling their own fate. Ecuador's final game is against Peru, who is out of contention. Chile will play Paraguay. Both teams would qualify for the cup with a win.

The Europeans have their first representative as well. Still with 2 games to play, an undefeated Germany has clinched its spot. The fight behind them is neck and neck, however, as 7 different teams still have a chance for those final three spots.

The APAC region is still wide open. With 3 games left to play, Japan is the only remaining undefeated, after China's surprise 35-28 victory of Australia. No one in the group has been mathematically eliminated, although South Korea and Singapore would need to win out and get serious help.
