Suttorps Huge Day Lifts Western to Victory
Gunnison, CO - The Western Colorado Mountaineers improved their overall winning streak to 5 this past weekend with a very impressive 28-6 victory over the visting Nevada Wolfpack. Despite the Mountaineers being outgained yet again, which seems to be a common theme this season, they still found a way to win the football game.
The first score of the game came when QB Pete Cantrell was able to find Shaun Suttorp on a simple hitch route, and a perfectly placed ball and overly aggressive DB allowed for Suttorp to make the catch and run 29 yards for his 2nd TD of the season.
The score would remain 7-0 for quite sometime until Nevada was finally able to get a drive going midway through the 2nd quarter. The drive would eventually stall deep in Western territory and the Wolfpack had to settle for a 30 yard Hardison FG to cut the lead to 7-3. Western would answer right back on their following drive, with the second connection between Cantrell and Suttorp in the game, this one going for 40 yards and a 14-3 lead heading into the half.
The start of the 3rd quarter, saw both teams really struggle to do much of anything. Donny Nelson for Western put the ball on the ground 2 times, and Cantrell threw his 2nd INT of the game. Nevada however could not find a way to score. They had one good drive that ended with a Hardison missed FG from 38 yards, and by the teams body language on the sideline they truly looked down on themselves.
It wasnt until late in the 4th quarter that we actually saw our next score of the game. That being another Hardison FG, this one from 35 yards out with 3 minutes remaining cutting the lead to 14-6. Then on the Mountaineers very next play from scrimmage offensive cordinator Ryan McDonough broke the pattern of running on first down. Cantrell fired the ball deep down the left side finding Suttorp and 73 yards later he had his 3rd TD of the game. All but ending the hopes of the Wolfpack for a comeback. The scoring was not over though, as on the Wolfpacks answering drive the Mountaineer defense came up huge yet again. With their backs deep in their own territory, Charrod Cameron was able to jump a Nevada out route and intercept his second pass of the game and sprint 94 yards the other way for the score.
The Western offense truly struggled all day and despite 4 turnovers, with 2 Nelson fumbles and 2 Cantrell INT's the Mountaineers found a way to win. Cantrell struggled throughout only completing 6 passes on the day. Three of those however went for six points as Shaun Suttorp had his best day as a Mountaineer hauling in 3 passes for a career high 142 yards and 3 TDs. Nelson also had a good day minus the 2 fumbles lost, with 152 yards on 21 carries.
The Defense which came up huge all day while being on the field for numerous plays because of the 4 turnovers on offense allowed just 6 total points. Senior LB Dion Gallagher tallied a season high 13 tackles, while Safety Darren Garcia chipped in 11 tackles of his own and grabbed another INT for his 3rd straight game. With the INT, Garcia now has 4 on the season and is among the conference leaders in that category.
The win now pushes Western Colorado to 5-1 overall and undefeated at 2-0 in the MWC. Things look to get a little tougher for the Mountaineers as they will face the Wyoming Cowboys and thier star QB Brett Smith. Also Wyoming is coming off a heatbreaking loss at home to the Fresno State Bulldogs 24-21. Kickoff is scheduled for next weekend at Mountaineer Bowl at 1 PM local time.
