Re: Resurrection in the Valley of the Sun - an Arizona State Story

Arizona State Sun Press

2012 Schedule Outlook

Week 1 - The Sun Devils open the season at home against Colorado State, in a game that should be an easy transition to regular-season football. Arizona State will be looking to polish the execution on both sides of the ball and start the season off on a good note.
Prediction – Arizona State 41, Colorado State 13

Week 2 – This should be the first real test for the Sun Devils as they travel to Lubbock to face Texas Tech on the road. This game looks to be pretty evenly-matched as both teams are seeking a ‘W’. If Arizona State can control the tempo of the game, this one should be another victory for the Devils.
Prediction – Arizona State 38, Texas Tech 31

Week 3 – Back at home for week 3, the Sun Devils are set to take on the #12 ranked Michigan State team. Emotions will be running high as ASU looks to take down its first ranked team of 2012. The Devils will need to be at full caliber in order to pull this one out.
Prediction – Michigan State 31, Arizona State 21

Week 4 – The Sun Devils will stay home for their week 4 game against Utah. The Utes come in looking to build on their debut campaign in the Pac-12 last season and have high expectations coming in. ASU will need to douse their hopes quickly if they want to emerge with one for the ‘Win’ column.
Prediction – Arizona State 31, Utah 28 (2 OT)

Week 5 – Coming into week 5, the Sun Devils will face a stiff Cal team on the road. This game doesn’t have much in the way of off-field storylines, but the hype will be there come gameday.
Prediction – Arizona State 34, Cal 13

Week 7 – After a bye week, ASU look to come back strong as they head to Boulder to face Colorado. The Buffaloes will want to make a statement in this Pac-12 game and won’t go down without a fight.
Prediction – Arizona State 37, Colorado 20

Week 8 – In what is shaping up to be the battle of the year, #4 Oregon comes to town in a clash of Pac-12 powers. ASU will look to upset the Top 5 Ducks with the crowd at Sun Devil Stadium in full force behind them.
Prediction - Oregon 45, Arizona State 34

Week 9 –UCLA comes to town for an unexciting clash during week 9. ASU will be favored to win this game comfortably.
Prediction – Arizona State 28, UCLA 6

Week 10 – A road trip to Oregon State is in store for the Sun Devils entering week 10 of the season. The team looks to get a solid victory over the middle-of-the-pack Beavers.
Prediction – Arizona State 31, Oregon State 17

Week 11 – Week 11 brings excitement as the Devils travel to Los Angeles to face the #2 USC Trojans in the fabled ‘Colosseum’. This one is gonna be a tough game for ASU and victory will require perfect execution on all fronts.
Prediction - USC 41, Arizona State 24

Week 12 – Wazzu comes to town week 12 to pitch the Wildcats against the Sun Devils. ASU should be able to tack on another conference victory in this one pretty easily.
Prediction – Arizona State 35, Washington State 17

Week 13 - The final game to cap the season off is the annual rivalry game with Arizona. The Sun Devils look to take this game on the road and bring bragging rights back to Tempe.
Prediction – Arizona State 34, Arizona 28

Re: Resurrection in the Valley of the Sun - an Arizona State Story

Arizona State Sun Press

Coach Bio:

Sam Davis
In his first season in charge of the ASU football team, Sam Davis is making quite a splash on and off the field. Arizona State Sun Press takes you on a journey to find out exactly who this new kid on the block really is.

Shawn Robinson: Good morning, Mr. Davis. Shawn Robinson, Sun Press, how’s everything going, coach?

Sam Davis: Good, good. Thank you for having me. What can I do for you, Shawn?

SR: Just a few quick questions for you today, sir. My goal is to help everyone get to know you here at ASU. Since this is your first year here, I wanted to be the first person to welcome you to campus and get to know you.

*laughing* SD: Sounds good, so far. Let ‘er rip then, Shawn.

SR: Okay to get the ball rolling, how old are you?

SD: I’m 33, Shawn.

SR: Okay, cool. And how long have you been coaching?

SD: I’ve been an assistant for 6 years but this is my first real taste of power as a head coach here at ASU.

SR: Are you concerned at all about the state of ASU’s football program and do you foresee any challenges in reaching your goals with this team?

SD: Well, Shawn, it’s always an uncertainty when you switch schools and have a new program you need to settle into. I personally love ASU. I feel like we have the tools necessary to start a new wave of trends here. The Pac-12 is almost wide open for grabs if a team can knock off one of the two powers in the conference; those of course being USC and Oregon. Part of why I’m being brought in to coach is because I believe that ASU can be an elite team as well. I’m here to make sure the rest of the country is aware of us threats to beat anyone on any day.

SR: Sounds like you have what it takes, coach. One last question and then I’ll have my introduction finished. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least excited and 10 the most…how stoked are you to be a Sun Devil?

SD: I’m an 11, Shawn. I see a bright future for this team over the next few years…and it starts here. It starts now…

Re: Resurrection in the Valley of the Sun - an Arizona State Story

@

Tempe, AZ - In an easy debut to the 2012 season, Arizona State looked to get things rolling on a high note. This game was never really close as the opening kickoff was returned for 100 yards and a TD by FS Zack Little. The Devils looked to capitalize on their early lead, following up the opening kickoff score with a defensive stop. On the first play from scrimmage for Colorado State, QB Garrett Grayson threw into coverage and was picked off by ASU MLB Steffon Martin. The interception was returned for 29 yards and a defensive TD. Arizona State up 14-0 very early on…and would never look back.

FS Zack Little (3) gets the season started with a bang as he takes the opening kickoff back 100 yards for a TD. 7-0 ASU

MLB Steffon Martin (32) intercepts CSU and returns it for a 29-yard TD. 14-0 ASU

Some key areas that need work also showed up in this game. The first of which was bad decision-making by 1st team QB Mike Bercovici. If Arizona State wants to have a chance at making a title run, he has got to read the defense better and throw to the smartest receiving option. Bercovici was 0-3 in his first series culminating with an INT in Colorado State territory. That interception would lead to 7 points for Colorado State as they exploit a rare Safety Blitz and light up their receiver in the corner of the endzone. It’s 14-7 at the end of the first. As RB Cameron Marshall scores on a run to make it 21-7, it was ASU’s first offensive touchdown of the game. It came with 2:05 left before the half after several earlier stalled drives. Bercovici was 4-12 for 22 yards in the first half and coach Sam Davis wasn’t very pleased about it. It’s rumored there were serious discussions on the sideline to pull Bercovici at the half. He will need to work on his scrambling as he’s taken quite a beating today; he hasn’t gotten sacked but he’s been knocked around back there.

Early in the second half, a fumble caused by MLB Steffon Martin was recovered by DT Will Sutton and returned 27 yards down to the opponent’s 3 yard-line. This was an exciting play that fired up the defense and got the crowd interested again. Cameron Marshall would punch it in on 2nd and goal making it 28-7. So far, this game has been all defense and special teams play carrying the Sun Devils. The offense hasn’t contributed much to this game. A goalline stand by the defense with 1:56 to go in the 3rd forces a field goal for CSU; the score stands 28-10. Punt return by ASU WR Jamal Miles goes 75 yards for a TD to make the score 35-10 with 5:47 to go in the game. After an INT on 1st down, the resulting drive ends in a 28 yard TD pass from QB Mike Bercovici to TE Max Smith to make it 42-10 with 3:59 left. The game would end 45-10 after a field goal from ASU who were “testing their kicker.”

MLB Steffon Martin (32) forces a fumble here that set-up a 27-yard return by DT Will Sutton (90) to the opponents' 3-yardline.

The Sun Devils now turn their attention to their first test of the year. Texas Tech will be a lot more prepared than Colorado State, and facing them on the road doesn’t make it any easier.
